New York’s Arthur Ashe Stadium, the largest tennis stadium in the world, reverberated with loud cheers. A new champion was born. 19-year-old Coco Gauff won the US Open singles finals, beating Aryna Sabalenka. The crowd included her proud parents and A-listers such as the Obamas, Alec Baldwin, Kevin Durant, Nicole Kidman, and boxing’s own Mike Tyson. Speaking of which, as the father of a tennis-playing daughter, the former champion even took to social media to congratulate Gauff on her triumph.

Despite a poor start in front of her adoring New York City fans, sixth-seeded Gauff overcame her nerves. She defeated the second-seeded, 25-year-old Belarusian Sabalenka, who had won the Australian Open singles earlier this year 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Gauff’s maiden Grand Slam victory comes off the first-round exit from Wimbledon two months ago.

A new star seems to have arisen from the horizon. For a tennis player who made her professional debut five years ago through the ITF Women’s circuit, it’s been a remarkable journey. She has won eight doubles titles and held the number-one ranking. The success at the US Open makes it her sixth WTA Tour singles title and marks a new chapter in her career. She is the first teenager since Serena Williams in 1999 to accomplish the feat. So Mike Tyson commended Gauff on her success and added that the country and people worldwide rejoiced.

Congratulatory notes poured in from several corners for Coco Gauff. Undisputed champion Claressa Shields commended her victory with a message. Footwear giant New Balance, which inked an endorsement deal with a 14-year-old Gauff in 2018, also joined, sharing their admiration through their Instagram account.

Star on the rise

It should be noted that the youngest Heavyweight champion’s daughter, Milan, is an aspiring tennis star. Tennis has been a big part of her life ever since she was a little girl, and she looked up to tennis stars like Novak Djokovic and the Williams sisters. Ever since, taking her passion a bit more seriously, she soon began training hard and competing regularly. It seems she spends around 10 hours every week at the gym. Additionally, per several reports, she occasionally practices and plays with her role models. Nevertheless, she is honing her skills in the best place. Serena Williams and Coco Gauff’s coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, also works with Milan Tyson occasionally.
