Coco Gauff's Olympic debut: Is she the next Serena Williams in the making?

Coco Gauff has etched her name in the history of tennis as she became the youngest American woman to win a singles match at the Olympics. The distinction is only matched by legendary tennis player Venus Williams. 20-year-old Gauff has been making waves in the world of tennis with her incredible feats and historic record-breaking performances.

While Gauff was continuing to have a strong performance in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, boxing great Mike Tyson’s daughter Milan Tyson also expressed her admiration for the gifted tennis player with one of the expressions used by the player and her fans as well.

The United States Tennis Association posted a picture of Gauff on Instagram where she is seen posing with both thumbs pointed toward her back, which has ‘USA’ printed on it. Milan commented on the post, “Aura is going crazyyyy”, acknowledging Gauff’s skill and game.

Furthermore, when Gauff was just 15, the legendary boxer had seen her putting her boxing skills to use. Tyson stated, “Future GOAT 15-year-old WTA @CocoGauff Awesome example of kindness, courage and tenacity. Look out for what she does in 2020.”  Milan is also very keen on playing tennis and considers Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic as her favorite players.

It’s interesting to note that her strong passion for the game has made her boxer father frequently attend the US Open. Milan began playing tennis at the age of three, and by the time she was twelve, Patrick Mouratoglou, the former coach of Serena Williams, had taken her under his wing. She has also trained under Williams as well. Moreover, Tyson was also seen at Mouratoglou’s charity event in June this year at the French Riviera.

Gauff made a strong at the 2024 Paris Olympics winning the first three matches. The 20-year-old lost the singles game to Croatia’s Donna Vekic. The American lost the opening set after she was leading 5-2. However, during the second set, she argued with the umpire which lasted for several minutes.

As Gauff was staging her comeback, the umpire called Venice’s ball out before Gauff returned the ball, and she went on to miss it. Gauff missed the ball, therefore even though it was in, the point was not replayed. She even argued with the umpire about replaying the point. She tried to make her case and said, “You have to understand this is not fair.”

Eventually, a teary-eyed Gauff lost the match, putting an end to her Olympics run. However, she serves as one of the most promising players, and might bring a medal in the next Olympics. Meanwhile, what do you think about Milan’s comment on Gauff? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
