Cristiano Ronaldo clip fooled Ryan Garcia's mom—how much can we trust AI in sports?

Ryan Garcia‘s mother Lisa Garcia is a devout Christian woman with strong family values. She prioritizes her family more than her health which is currently not in the best condition as she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. When Ryan Garcia was going through a tough period after being suspended by the NYSAC for consuming the banned substance Ostarine, and the backlash he was receiving for his racist and Islamophobic comments on social media, she was his pillar of support.

Time and again, you would see Lisa Garcia championing traditional family values on social media. This time, Lisa Garcia was moved by soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo‘s love for his family. But, there is a caveat — it might just be fake! The video that is circulating on social media shows snippets of Ronaldo talking about why he still lives with his mother.

“You won’t believe why I still live with my mother,” a voiceover of Cristiano Ronaldo begins as he cites his reasons. “My mother raised me and she dedicated her whole life for me. She would go to sleep hungry, just so I could eat. Because we were really poor. We had no money at all. She worked whole day as a maid to buy me my first shoes so I can play football. To be honest, all my success and glory is because of her. And as long as she is alive, she will always be by my side.” Heartwarming, isn’t it? Except for the fact that the entire voiceover is AI-generated, and the real Cristiano Ronaldo had nothing to do with it.

However, Lisa Garcia seems to have fallen for the trap and was overcome by emotions. Witnessing the clip, she took to her Instagram story to share, “Go ahead, try to call him a mama’s boy. He is proud with no apologies for his gratitude towards mom.” But there is one dead giveaway that the post circulating on Instagram is false.

What is the truth?

No, the Portuguese soccer player does not live with his mother, Dolores. First of all, a cursory look at the post’s caption accompanying the video would disabuse you of that notion. “Everything said in my videos is original script written by me, it’s not real quotes or opinions of those people. I use AI to create the voiceovers in my videos. They’re not real voices of the people we talk about,” the post reads.

Have an interesting take?

Yes, the Al Nassr FC forward does love his mother a lot, but he doesn’t live with her. During his stint at Real Madrid, Dolores used to stay next door to CR7. Moreover, she would visit his son frequently when he played for Manchester United and Juventus as well.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo currently resides in the opulent Kingdom Suite at the Four Seasons Hotel in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Alongside his girlfriend, children, and entourage, Ronaldo occupies 17 rooms spread across two floors of the suite. But, his mother is unable to visit frequently, as the lengthy flight from Lisbon, Portugal, to Saudi Arabia makes such trips difficult. “There are many hours on the plane. It’s very tiring,” a Portuguese outlet quoted Ronaldo’s mother as saying.
