The Philadelphia Flyers might have lost, but they stole the show! How, you may ask? Right before the game, the team paid homage to their city as they donned the clothes of the famous fictional character from Philadelphia – ‘Rocky Balboa’, from the iconic movie series ‘Rocky’. Furthermore, as it turned out, it helped encapsulate the ‘never give up’ attitude.

The New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers traded their usual rinks for the open sky at MetLife Stadium. This further ignited their rivalry under the 2024 NHL Stadium Series spotlight. The intensity was evident when both teams came dressed for war. Following the Flyers’ antics, the New Jersey Devils  too didn’t disappoint with their stunning entry!

The Philadelphia Flyers aced the ‘Rocky’ mindset

The Devils dominated the game against the Flyers with a score of 6-3. Philly’s battle-tested outdoorsmen, the Flyers, returned to the ice rink under the stars. Their sixth open-air clash against the Devils in the 2024 Stadium Series rekindled their love affair with outdoor hockey. From Lake Tahoe in 2021 to the 2017 & 2019 Stadium Series, and even the legendary 2010 & 2012 Winter Classics – they knew how to pull up for such a historic game.

Trading jerseys for Rocky’s sweat suit and taped hands, the Flyers hit the ice not just as players, but as Philadelphia’s underdogs. This Stadium Series clash transcended hockey, becoming a tribute to the city’s fighting spirit. Moreover, the players had black skullcaps on, emulating the dress worn by Sylvester Stallone. Furthermore, the Flyers forward Joel Farabee spoke about the team’s attire before the matchup.

He said, “We wanted something that people from Philly were gonna like and get behind. It’s pretty fun to just do something like this. And planning it out throughout the season was pretty fun.” However, the opponent New Jersey Devils wasn’t too far behind when the purpose was to connect with their fans through their outfits.

The New Jersey Devils weren’t just playing hockey at the 2024 Stadium Series; they were channeling their inner wise guys. In a nod to the iconic HBO series ‘The Sopranos’, set in their home state, the Devils rolled up to MetLife Stadium sporting plush velour tracksuits – the quintessential mafia attire.
