Joshua Clottey recently gave an interview to JoyNews, a TV News Channel in Ghana, West Africa. Clottey talked about his loss against Manny Pacquiao, and also shared some stories of struggle with his manager, and how he was scammed and used. The fight had WBO welterweight championship on the line. Clottey’s loss was a great deal in Africa, as he’s one of the few boxers from the region who had remarkable achievements. People had their eyes stuck on him.
Joshua Clottey is a retired Ghanaian professional boxer. He is best known for his competitive bout against Manny Pacquiao in 2010, which he lost by a unanimous decision. Clottey was known for his tough, durable style and had a successful career in the welterweight division, having held the IBF Welterweight title.

In the Interview with JoyNews, Joshua Clottey stated that he lost the fight against Manny Pacquiao deliberately so that he could ensure that his manager would not get paid. He had a very bad experience with the manager. So much that he even said, “I regret signing with that manager, I regret listening to that trainer who told me to sign that contract, and because of that I started becoming a strong person.“
And after that, he made sure that he never let anybody talk for him and he was the one taking all the final decisions for himself. Reportedly, his manager negotiated a very less amount for him during his fight with Pacquiao.
So according to Clottey, he would be getting only 3$ on every pay-per-view, which was sold for 100$, while his manager was earning 33 percent from the pay-per-view alone. So he felt cheated by his own manager, and that’s why he allegedly decided to lose against Pacquiao. And after ‘PacMan’ defeated Clottey, he went on to make his basketball career in PBA.
However, the fans are not ready to believe the former boxer, as they think that he’s lying because he is still embarrassed about his loss and is not able to cope with it. The fans also don’t seem to appreciate his statement about his loss.
Fans react to Clottey’s claim
One of them clearly stated that this whole statement was a lie and that he has watched and it never felt like Clottey was losing deliberately. He wrote, “It’s a total lie…….manny whipped him mercilessly. He tell this to his children in their living room not us. I watch that bout.”
Another fan supported the previous comment by saying the same thing that the former boxer took a severe beating from PacMan. They said, “No, you were severely beaten basabasa“
Another fan used humor but agreed with others about him getting legitimately defeated by Pacquiao. They wrote, “Gerrout!! Can you defeat manny? You were whipped like a school boy who refused to do his homework.“
One fan was very disappointed by the interview with the boxer. They wrote, “…and that was his end as an elite boxer. Clottey was held in such high esteem.”
One of the fans reminded everyone how in 2010, Clottey’s statements were different regarding his loss. He wrote, “Are you not the one who said you lost because you eat ‘banku and kanwe’?“

But now not all the fans were in disagreement with the statement made by the former boxer. Some believed him and they wrote comments in his favor. One person said that they always knew it. They wrote, “Masa we knew it.“
Another fan acknowledged Joshua Clottey’s struggle and wrote, “Yooo we hear!“
Well whether it was a deliberate loss or not, there are no doubts that Joshua Clottey was a talented individual inside the ring and nobody’s legacy must be determined based on a loss. Rather it must be determined based on their wins.
