For the past few days, the prospect of an eventual showdown between IBF welterweight champion Jaron Ennis and Teofimo Lopez has been keeping the fans up. The latter challenged ‘Boots’ during the Emanuel Navarrete vs. Oscar Valdez 2 broadcast Saturday, claiming that he wants the fight before moving on to Terence Crawford. This is a golden opportunity for Ennis, as he just ducked out of a fight against Vergil Ortiz Jr., claiming he does not want to move up to 154.
Things escalated when Lopez’s promoter, Bob Arum, backed the fight, stating that they were working on a deal. The WBO Super Lightweight champion will have to move up to 147 after only five fights at Super Lightweight. Fans want to see this match, which will give a huge boost to Boots’ star power. However, there are always exceptions. One fan criticized the fight, and Teofimo Lopez rained down insults on the critic in a state of fury.

Teofimo Lopez’s furious online tirade
Ray Jackson, a boxing fan, took to his ‘X’ and posted a fan-made poster of Jaron Ennis vs. Teofimo Lopez. He wrote, “I wouldn’t get 2 excited abt this fight remember we thought Tank vs Loma was happening 🤷🏾♂️,” stating that fans should take this news with a grain of salt. He compared the situation with Gervonta Davis and Vasiliy Lomachenko‘s fight negotiations in early 2024. Tank was ready to fight the Ukrainian legend, and the negotiations were going smoothly. However, the fight abruptly got canceled when Lomachenko announced that he would take a sabbatical from boxing. Jackson believes that, given the circumstances, no expectations should exist until the official fight’s confirmation.

However, what the fan did not expect while criticizing the fight was that it would give Teofimo Lopez an excuse to rain down expletives on him. The 21-1 boxer, in the comments, blasted Ray Jackson with a bunch of insults and wrote, “Shut yo forklift school bus fat stomach p**ic face hair Looking like a wannabe Young Jezzy face a**! looking like you just woke up from ash cr*ck of don big gorilla back ah. You so ugly yo momma wished she could refund (non refundable) head ahh.”
While the behavior of the boxer is unacceptable, given everything that he has said recently, it was not that surprising. Lopez recently got into trouble over his racist remarks against Tank and Crawford. He has been constantly getting involved in controversies since then.
Coming back to the fight, while both fighters have shown their interest, things are not that simple. This fight has the potential to shake the welterweight division and the future of both these fighters.

Jaron Ennis’ big opportunity
Ennis signed a three-fight contract with Eddie Hearn earlier this year. So far, he has fought twice under the Matchroom banner. Unlike his first, he looked slightly worse against Karen Chukhadzhian. There is only one fight remaining in the new contract, and both Hearn and Ennis need a knockout, otherwise, the partnership might be in danger.
On the other hand, this will be Teofimo Lopez’s first fight at 147 after winning 5 consecutive fights at Super lightweight. He would have the chance to capture Ennis’ IBF Welterweight title in his first fight and ruin Boot’s dream of unifying the division.
Apart from the personal front, the welterweight division has not witnessed good action since the departure of Terence Crawford. This fight can restore that and give this division a much-needed boost.

With both of these boxers having some big plans post this fight, a loss here can completely derail those plans. However, as Ray Jackson said, first, we must have to go past the negotiation stage.
