With his fifth career loss, many believe it might be the end of the line for Adrien Broner. The former four-division champion faced Blair Cobbs on June 7. The Don King card at Hollywood, Florida’s Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, was expected to resurrect his career, which has been on a downhill spiral for the last few years. Instead, the upset loss to a hitherto unknown name has brought him to the crossroads, where he now stares at the harsh reality of taking some hard decisions.

His loss has drawn a mixed bag of reactions. Understandably, the setback must have dejected diehard fans. But those who aren’t must have found his loss the most opportune time to throw barbs. Clips of the way Broner fought, especially his knockdown, have been doing the rounds across social media platforms. Now, a video that shows his corner goading him to raise his tempo has garnered substantial attention. It didn’t take much time before users started baring their souls.

The tweet from @shannonsharpeee read, “They really wanted Adrien Broner to die in the ring.” It shows Adrien Broner and Blair Cobbs engaged in a duel. Maintaining a distance, the former appeared hesitant to hit. Cobbs, on the other hand, appeared a bit busier, moving around and hitting Broner at will.

The prompts, presumably from Adrien Broner’s corner, reveal the level of desperation. Shouts could be heard: “I can’t f*ck with you… Throw your hands, man. Get going… You said you’ll die, man… Yeah, get aggressive… You said die, then die, man…

From the start, it was clear who came prepared for the fight. Appearing ill-at-ease, Adrien Broner seemed reluctant to throw punches. Blair Cobbs, a WBC-NABF welterweight title holder since 2019, appeared more involved. The second round saw him knock down Broner. However, the Cincinnati-born boxer got back and resumed fighting. He displayed some recovery in the following rounds. But it was too little, too late.

Fans: Adrien Broner (IS), ‘The Problem’

The comment box witnessed several instances of laughter, trolls, and memes. But many of those who commented felt Adrien Broner should bear some of the blame for his loss. Let’s check out what some of the followers wrote.

This user pointed out that Adrien Broner just kept on talking. All he did was promote the fight and get maximum attention. So the user seemingly wonders how his team members couldn’t foresee that he would barely risk his life inside the ring.

The next user taunted that Adrien Broner perhaps believed that he would be the next Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Then the next follower wondered whether anyone is still arranging fights for the ‘Problem’ when he is clearly well past his peak performance.

Taking a cue from the way Broner walked back to the dressing room, this user emphasized that the former champion’s boxing narrative was complete. Even his team members hesitated to support him, it seems.

According to the next user, Adrien Broner squandered away all his skills and talent. His primary focus remained on mimicking Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his lifestyle. But the fact remained that ‘The Money’ barely followed the life the ‘Problem’ led. Ideally, his focus should have remained on training and sharpening his skills. He should have shunned alcohol and avoided people who weren’t keen on taking him to boxing heights.

If Adrien Broner’s is carefully reviewed, then it shows that during the last 7 years, he had been active for only three years. The remaining four years are basically the two breaks he took, each lasting nearly two years.

So probably his inactivity, combined with his troubles outside the ring, all together took away the shine off an otherwise entertaining, talented, and solid-chinned fighter. It remains to be seen what decision Adrien Broner will take next. He will turn 35 on July 28. The defeat to Blair Cobbs might lead to a lesser interest in his fights. If he feels there’s still some boxing left in him, then probably a few tune-ups might do him good before making another attempt at a major draw.

What’s your take on the reactions? Like many, do you also feel that Adrien Broner’s time in the spotlight is over?
