It’s ‘Clap-Back Thursday’. Oscar De La Hoya‘s weekly show appears to have hit the mark. Fans and critics now eagerly anticipate the arrival of its next edition. Some might criticize De La Hoya for using the forum to deride his detractors. But one can’t deny; through his talks, the former world champion-turned-ace promoter provides a different perspective on some of the latest developments extending across boxing.
Back with a new episode; this time, however, Oscar De La Hoya spared one of his favorite subjects, Canelo Alvarez. Of course, Edgar Berlanga wasn’t so lucky. But, to give him company, former four-division champion and Boxing Hall of Famer Juan Manuel Marquez joined. ‘The Golden Boy’s move might be a direct outcome of recent public outbursts from Marquez and Berlanga targeting him.

First Juan Manuel Marquez. “Most recently Juan Manuel Marquez went on a podcast where he b**ched and cried that I took 20% of his pay-per-view purse from the Pacquiao fight in 2012,” said Oscar De La Hoya. According to him, the Mexican legend entered the fight with his promoter and legal team by his side.

Regarding the 20% of the pay-per-view purse from the fight, De La Hoya explained that it was the agreed-upon promoter’s cut, which Marquez consented to while signing the contract. “Do you think I’m what? I should have worked for free?” asked ‘The Golden Boy’. The Olympic gold medalist found it quite confusing that Juan Manuel Marquez found it so challenging to manage his own money despite his background as an accountant!
Oscar De La Hoya then offered a sarcastic apology for Marquez’s financial troubles: “I’m sorry you’re broke.” However, for ‘Dinamita’ to have reached such a situation, he hardly deserved the blame. De La Hoya continued, “I have always paid everyone exactly what they are contracted and entitled to; it’s why I’ve been in business for more than 20 years, Juan, let’s be honest.”

He suggested that probably Juan Manuel Marquez followed in Canelo Alvarez’s footsteps. The super middleweight champion had made similar accusations in the lead-up to the Munguia fight. Nevertheless, De La Hoya ended the discourse with a caution: “Slandering me is only going to get you in trouble, dude, so keep my name out of your mouth.”
While speaking with legend Marco Antonio Barrera on the ‘Un Round Mas’ podcast, Juan Manuel Marquez pointed fingers at ‘The Golden Boy Promotions’ for ‘stealing’ from him.

Oscar De La Hoya reserved Clap-Back’s second part for Edgar Berlanga. The ongoing spat between Berlanga and De La Hoya saw both throw shades at each other. Especially matters concerning the former’s Puerto Rican heritage seem to have become the bone of contention. So signaling that he had had enough, at the final press conference, Berlanga went after De La Hoya. “And I want to say something, too: f*ck Oscar De La Hoya too. We’re going to smack him when we see him. He’s got to stop. He’s trying to f*ck up the event,” he said.
De La Hoya called out Berlanga’s latest insinuations. Perhaps the reason why ‘The Chosen One’ is so riled up could be because he was challenged to share his Puerto Rican birth certificate according to the former boxer. De La Hoya believes that unlike legend Felix Trinidad, Edgar Berlanga is hardly connected to his Puerto Rican roots. De La Hoya added, “When I fought Trinidad, he had the entire island travel to Las Vegas to support him. Or are you upset because I said you’re a subpar opponent for Canelo?”

Oscar De La Hoya cautioned Edgar Berlanga to stay focused on the upcoming fight. However, he seemed certain that Canelo Alvarez would easily dominate the bout. Though loaded with sarcasm, De La Hoya wished Berlanga all the best: “Good luck and enjoy your first and last pay-per-view experience.”
