Hotboxin’s with Mike Tyson has staged a coup of sorts. With barely a day to go for what could be one of the most significant clashes of the modern era, the show roped in Errol Spence Jr. for a tête-à-tête. Despite a load of expectations resting on his shoulders, the unified Welterweight champion appeared relaxed. Right from the upcoming bout, he took Tyson and co-host DJ Whoo Kid through his life. Especially when he picked up the gloves under the most unsavory circumstances.

Last year, many a heart was broken when it dawned that Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford‘s clash would not happen. Many consider it akin to the legendary Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao contest in 2015. Hence millions woke up from their slumber this year upon learning that the bout almost every boxing fan wants to see will happen at the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on July 29.

So Spence Jr. spoke about his confidence level and how he planned to take him (Crawford) out. The talks moved from the Dallas music scene to ‘The Truth’s’ road accidents. He spoke about his plans after the fight and to spend more time with his family. Upon learning that Long Island was Spence Jr.’s place of birth, Mike Tyson revealed his time at a juvenile center. Errol Spence Jr. talked about how his father introduced him to the sport at age fifteen after watching him playing with his friends in boxing gloves. He reasoned that perhaps that was his father’s way of keeping him out of trouble.

Whoo Kid asked, “Your dad got you out of trouble; um, who’s the trainer to [train] you?” Spence Jr. shared that Gene Vivero initially trained him. So originally, the father and son duo first checked out quite a few gyms where ‘The Truth’ could train.

Finally, they landed at a Spanish-Mexican gym. They had even checked ad gym run by members from the African-American community. However, Spence Jr.’s father disagreed with the atmosphere at the place and opted for the Mexican gym. So the Welterweight champion said, “they was in there like it was one of those like rough gyms where yeah you can get staph infection you put your hands in one of them gloves you probably get staph infection the next day…

‘The Truth’s’ austere disposition

To Whoo Kid’s surprise, Spence Jr. added that people at the boxing gym shared gloves and hand wraps. Moreover, there were no special features like air conditioners. There was hardly any difference in the temperature outside and inside the gym. Probably revealing his inclination for Spartan surroundings, ‘The Truth’ emphasized that even the gym he visits now doesn’t have any air conditioner.
