George Benton is often credited as the author of the famous ‘Philly Shell’ technique. However, it was the Mayweather family who made it synonymous with their style of fighting. Floyd Mayweather Sr. was a known practitioner. The 1978 fight with Sugar Ray Leonard is an easy reference. But it was his son, Floyd Mayweather Jr., who took the technique to new heights. However, it’s been over six years since he retired. In a strict sense, in his absence, no one appears to have taken up the mantle of exclusively using the shoulder roll.

Probably, that could be the reason why so many fans and critics found themselves spooked. They saw Ryan Garcia using the technique to render Oscar Duarte‘s offensive ineffective. During the post-fight conference, he spoke about employing the method. Then Garcia also revealed how trainer Derrick James tried dissuading him. However, as the rounds progressed, with Duarte digging out a workaround, ‘KingRy’ eventually resorted back to fighting the way he usually fought.

Speaking with the media, ‘KingRy’ said, “Derrick told me never to do that; it’s like don’t do that sh*t; you ain’t Mayweather, and I was like, he he’ll never admit that, but he did say that.” Then immediately, one of the reporters asked how the technique sprung up all of a sudden. Garcia replied that it just came naturally to him. So after some time, when he got into the groove, he felt like continuing with it further. Consequently, Duarte couldn’t hit for a few rounds.

However, after some time, the Mexican opponent got to the bottom of it and started posting responses. Ryan Garcia then decided to switch back to his original style of fighting. He said, “He really couldn’t hit me for two or three rounds, then he started figuring out, and I’m forget this. I’m going go back to being me.

It was a crucial test, and thankfully, to everyone’s relief, Ryan Garcia cleared it with flying colors.

Hopefully, fans and followers will remember the fight for the knockout. Perhaps, on a lighter note, Garcia’s attempt at going Mayweather Jr. might draw a few laughs. Otherwise, the bout had attracted all sorts of news that had much less to do with actual boxing. There was a tense buildup between Ryan Garcia and the promoters, Oscar De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins, during the final pre-fight press conference. Then, to everyone’s surprise, the bout ended up being fought at 143 pounds catch weight instead of the initially thought of 140 pounds.

The win now puts Garcia back in contention for a major world title. But he still has a long way to go. The way to glory might see him cross paths with the likes of Teofimo Lopez, Subriel Matias, and perhaps Devin Haney. Of course, he called our Rolando Romero as well, apart from wishing a square up against archrival Shakur Stevenson.
