Shane Mosley is making headlines in the boxing world after his recent interview. Amongst other things, he weighed in on Floyd Mayweather as a boxer. Intriguingly, the two share a history. Back in 2010, both squared off against each and the undefeated boxer won via a unanimous decision. However, Mosley gave ‘TBE’ a tough fight and is one of the few boxers who were able to hurt him. Not to mention, their fight was a massive success and reportedly generated $78.3 Million.

Moreover, Mayweather has been a polarising figure. Despite achieving unprecedented accolades, many consider him to be overrated. In the interview, Mosley made some bold claims that ignited a renowned boxing promoter to share his two cents. What did Mosley say? What was the promoter’s response?

Shane Mosley undermines Floyd Mayweather’s achievements

In an interview with, ‘The Art of Dialogue,’ the 44-year-old was asked if he thinks he would have defeated Mayweather had the boxer fought him when he was younger. While his response was in the affirmative, his reasoning was intriguing. He claims that Mayweather thrived in an era where many great fighters like, Oscar De La Hoya, Félix Trinidad, and Ike Quartey were either past their prime or retired. Subsequently, he claimed that if Mayweather had fought them when they were in their prime, he would not have achieved the feat he has today.

He stated, “I think a lot of guys in my era (De la Hoya, Trinidad, Quartey) or anybody around my era if we would have fought in the same era, it wouldn’t be a Floyd Mayweather(era). Look how good Oscar did with him. Some people think Oscar won. Oscar was way past his prime, I already have beaten Oscar twice!”

Mosley’s speculations are based on his opinions about Mayweather and other boxers. However, many individuals would agree or disagree with what he had to say. Among those who reacted to Mosley’s comments was American promoter Lou DiBella.

Lou DiBella shares his two cents on Shane Mosley’s comments on Mayweather Jr.

DiBella is a renowned promoter and an advocate of the sport. He has produced many movies that are about boxing. On Twitter, he reacted to Mosley’s comments by asserting his opinion should have merit considering his experience in the sport. But at the same does think Mayweather’s greatness should not be undermined.

He stated, Don’t agree, but there’s nothing wrong with this point of view. It’s a legit opinion. It’s a CHAMPION’S point of view. Floyd would have been more tested by the #boxing era ahead of him. Doesn’t diminish Floyd’s greatness, though. Shane, a HOFer, just speaking his personal truth.”
