It’s pretty known how a defeat changes a man’s fortune overnight. More painful, perhaps, is the way the scores look upon him. A knockout defeat at the hands of Gervonta Davis seems to have made Ryan Garcia a target of ridicule. No wonder a mere suggestion of a prospective fight invited scorn from former WBA Continental Welterweight title holder Conor Benn.
The son of former world champion Nigel Benn has been out of boxing since his last bout against Chris Van Heerden. Then, late last year, news started filtering in of Benn failing two voluntary drug tests. It led to the postponement of a fight against Chris Eubank Jr., scheduled on October 8. Early this year, though, World Boxing Council (WBC) took him off the hook of ‘intentional doping.’
Conor Benn took to his Twitter handle ten days ago and released a statement. It read, “There is no news. Being ‘charged’ is a start of a process by which an athlete [has to] defend themselves. I have not been sanctioned by anyone & I’m not banned from boxing. I remain free to fight in events that are not sanctioned by the BBBoC…don’t even have a BBBoC licence.”

Probably in light of the recent developments, talks of a fight and return to the ring seem to be making progress. A few weeks ago, news came about Benn taking on one of boxing’s most extraordinary, Manny Pacquiao. The Filipino great, who retired two years ago, had expressed keen interest in a return. Then there are talks about picking up the unfinished argument with Chris Eubank Jr. or fighting against former IBF Welterweight champion Kell Brook.
‘The Destroyer’ is too much for ‘KingRy’; Conor Benn believes so
On the back of all these conversations, a suggestion from one of the most unexpected corners will turn a few heads. West Indian-British rapper and actress Chanel Cali, who is more popular as Shystie through her Instagram account, posited a match between Conor Benn and Ryan Garcia. She said, “Hear me out, though. When he’s back outside and able to fight, what about @conorbennofficial VS @kingryan at 140-147?…“

According to her, Garcia has indicated a move to 140 lbs, and the chance of a rematch with Davis seems most unlikely. Hence if he is looking for a big fight, why not start with Conor Benn? Interestingly the proposition barely moved one of the protagonists. Conor Benn responded with relative ease, saying, “Would get slept.”

According to BBC, UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) barred Conor Benn temporarily from all sports on March 15. Their statement read, “Ukad confirms that Mr. Benn was notified and provisionally suspended by Ukad on March 15, 2023, in accordance with the UK anti-doping rules. Whilst provisionally suspended, Mr. Benn is prohibited from participating in any capacity (or assisting another athlete in any capacity) in a competition, event, or activity that is organized, convened, authorized, or recognized by the British Boxing Board of Control or any other World Anti-Doping code-compliant sport.”

Though Benn surrendered his British boxing license after failing the drug tests, it didn’t impact the UKAD and British Boxing Board of Control’s authority to suspend him. But it should be noted that when it boils down to preventing Benn from being sanctioned to fight overseas, the BBBofC can do nothing more than appeal.
