Does Gervonta Davis lack the mindset to be as great as Pacquiao and Duran?

What separates Gervonta Davis from the rest? The Baltimorean puts on a show for the fans, has aggression, a knack for knockouts, and a backflip, making seeing him fight a delightful experience. But there has been one demand from the fans and pundits—something that pinches their eyes.

It’s the reluctance to fight other champions and rack up more gold. Davis, 29, has torn down every opponent he has faced and held a gold strap around his waist since 2017. First, it was the IBF super featherweight, and now it’s the WBA lightweight after his elevation. His lack of desire to have a go at other champions for more belts has dumbfounded the fans. That’s where he differs from the likes of Manny Pacquiao and Roberto Duran, who never shied away from fighting the best and going for more titles. That’s what ShowBizz The Adult argued too when he uploaded the clip to his channel.

The YouTuber not only contested the case for ‘Tank’ for an all-time great and lauded his power and aggression, but he also blasted his mindset. He believed the desire and zeal to be a champion were missing in Gervonta Davis. He said, “Here is my problem with Tank. My problem is I wish he had the Duran mindset. I wish he had a Pacquiao mindset, like I wish he wanted to be welterweight champion. Pacquiao was 5’5″, right?”

After putting Davis, at 30-0, ahead of ‘Pacquiao’ in fitness, punching power and calling him “slicker,” ShowBizz The Adult continued, “I just wish he had that mindset to say ‘I’m gonna conquer 147. I’m gonna conquer 140. Teofimo Lopez, you are next’. If he had that mindset, we’re talking about all-time great fighter. I think his abilities is all-time. But I’m saying greatness. I just wish he had that mindset.”

Interestingly, when Davis was elevated after Devin Haney left the 135-pound division, he wasn’t happy with the WBA’s call. He had called the belt “sh*t”.

Gervonta Davis to finally meet Shakur Stevenson in the ring

While there had been talks of Tank going up against Vasyl Lomachenko, the fight never materialized. So, he has yet to fight in a unification showdown despite holding a belt for over 7 years, irrespective of the division. It seems it might change now.

Eddie Hearn, who recently signed Shakur Stevenson, has reiterated his desire to match up ‘Sugar’ and Davis. The two boxers have been at each other’s throats for a while, but it never amounted to anything. The British promoter has laid down a plan for his new signee, as he declared, “For me, what we do is go Joe Cordina, William Zepeda, Gervonta Davis.”

Previously, Hearn, 45, had also admitted that a clash between Stevenson and Davis could be made in 2025. But it remains to be seen whether it happens or not.
