Call it bad luck or simply an unfortunate situation—IBF super middleweight champion William Scull has been treated as little more than an afterthought ahead of his May 3rd bout at The Venue in Riyadh. That reality became clear to the 32-year-old the moment he stepped into Radio City Music Hall for his press conference. As we all know, the Cuban fighter is set to face Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on Cinco de Mayo.
However, what fans, experts, and media members seem more interested in is the highly anticipated September 13th showdown against former two-division undisputed champion Terence Crawford. In reality, Canelo’s fight against Scull is little more than a formality—a chance to reclaim the IBF title that was stripped from him after he refused to face Scull as a mandatory challenger.
And that shows in the odds of the fight. Most oddsmakers have Canelo as a massive favorite ahead of the fight, but ‘El Indomable’ is confident he can turn this disrespect into motivation as he aims to cause an upset to become the ultimate spoiler in boxing history. “It’s disrespectful to me to speak about the other fight with Crawford and not wait for the result of our fight on May 3rd,” Scull said in an interview with The Ring.

“But it’s nothing new for me. Everybody’s been saying this. … I’m going to surprise the world in this moment.” Regardless of Scull’s odds, he earned his way to a Canelo fight by defeating Vladimir Shishkin and acquiring the title late last year. While William Scull has yet to face someone of Canelo’s caliber, he seems to already have a plan in place to get his mission accomplished.
“My style is a great style to fight Canelo,” Scull said. “It’s difficult to win against guys with the Russian style. But Canelo, he has a Mexican style. That’s easier for me. But I respect the Mexican style because they throw a lot of punches. I like that.” However, this is not the first time Scull had to back himself against Canelo Alvarez.

Alvarez, the WBA, WBC, WBO, and Ring champion, is eyeing a mega-fight with Terence Crawford in September, but Scull insists he won’t be overlooked. “I feel really good right now. I rely on my skills, I’m ready for May 3, and to give the fans a great fight, which is what they deserve,” he added. Alvarez will fight for the first time since beating Edgar Berlanga in September last year, making his next fight critical in proving he can beat Crawford later this year.

That said, it appears William Scull continues to be overlooked by everyone. However, in case he does cause an upset, this indifference towards him would quickly change. Just look at Lamont Roach Jr.—and he didn’t even beat Gervonta Davis. Do you think Scull stands a chance?
