Of late, the PBC offered Canelo Alvarez a guaranteed figure of $55 million to fight David Benavidez next. However, for two reasons Alvarez did not take the deal and parted ways with the PBC. On the one hand, Alvarez was offered more to fight Benavidez in Saudi Arabia. On the other hand, the Mexican boxer did not simply want to face David right now. So, does that leave a stain on Canelo’s legacy?
In his latest interview with Fight Hub TV, the former opponent of Canelo and Benavidez, Caleb Plant speculated on Alvarez not fighting David. Plant, who faced Benavidez in only his last fight, acknowledged the big fights Canelo has had. Having taken a thoughtful look at Canelo’s career, here is what he came to conclude.

In 2021, Caleb Plant shared the ring with Canelo Alvarez with the undisputed Super-Middleweight title on the line in the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas. Two years after the loss to Alvarez, Plant faced David Benavidez with the WBC Interim Super-Middleweight title on the line in 2023. Although Plant managed to go the distance of 12 rounds, Benavidez won via UD. Anyway, since Plant has been in the ring with both Alvarez and David, he was asked whether or not avoiding ‘Red Flag’ would tarnish Canelo’s legacy. Speaking to the Fight Hub TV, Plant answered in negative.

“I don’t know, I can’t say. He’s had a great career. You know he’s had a lot of big fights. He’s still a Hall of Famer,” said Plant who called out Jermall Charlo. “Probably, first ballot. They don’t just toss those out to anybody,” he added. At this, Plant was asked if Canelo would get an asterisk or a stain for not fighting Benavidez in the ring. In his reply, the 31-year-old reiterated, “He’s still a great fighter and he will still be a Hall of Famer.”
Anyway, in this context, one must mention that although a fight has yet to be scheduled, Canelo Alvarez will return during the Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas this year. And as per the reports, he will face an American boxer. While fans thought he would fight Jermall Charlo, others hoped he would face Benavidez. Hopefully, team Alvarez will reveal their plan soon.
