When George Kambosos Jr. was grinding away at camp, gearing up to trade punches with Daud Yordan—who had been leaving opponents flat on the canvas in his last four fights—he never expected a last-minute curveball. But did that throw a wrench in the showdown? Not at all. Initially, promoter Eddie Hearn was in jeopardy. However, a new name popped up in a matter of a few days.

Stepping up on just a week’s notice was none other than his fellow Aussie, Jake Wyllie. Fresh off a fight against Allan Villanueva last month, the 24-year-old is already lacing up his gloves again, ready to go to war in just two days. In a stunning turn of events, Wyllie went from holding a ticket to stealing the spotlight—what was meant to be a night in the stands is now a fight in the main event against Kambosos. But why did Daud Yordan pull the plug at the eleventh hour? Well, if you missed it, here’s everything you need to know.

Why Did George Kambosos Jr.’s Opponent Throw in the Towel?

As soon as the fight was called off, the Sydney native took to X, writing, “Damn former Champ, Yordan just pulled out, due to medical issues… I hope he’s ok as I know he was preparing very hard for this opportunity… 16-1 15KO Jake Wyllie. You are the current Australian 140 national Champion, you’re the only one that hasn’t been disrespectful for a payday, and I like how you have gone about your business, so I’m giving you the Rocky shot!!!

So what exactly happened to the hard-hitting Indonesian? Yesterday, The Ring Magazine caught up with the IBA World Super Lightweight Champion in a hospital bed in Jakarta. Just eight days before his highly anticipated fight, Yordan was forced to withdraw after being admitted for treatment. The 37-year-old former world title challenger spent three days in the hospital due to exhaustion from overtraining. But now, he’s on the mend.

“I feel better now,” the 43-4 KO boxer told The Ring. However, for now, “I will focus on my health and rest for a while and then think about boxing,” he stated. Despite the setback, Yordan remains optimistic. As a senator from West Borneo, he understands the ups and downs of both politics and boxing. “I’m not disappointed, these always happens in boxing or combat sports,” he added. And once he recovers completely, “I will be back and rise again.”

George Kambosos Jr. Slammed for Skipping Face-Off

If you didn’t know, the Aussie star was a no-show for his scheduled pre-fight face-off with Jake Wyllie at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena. Ultimately, the man behind Matchroom Promotions was left scratching his head on Wednesday, especially since every other fighter on the card showed up, with no excuses. “It’s a lack of respect. I don’t want to stoke any fires, but it’s very disrespectful,” Hearn told ESPN.

But Kambosos? He brushed it off like it was no big deal, claiming it was all a mix-up. “What face-off? No one told me about no face-off,” he said, casually pulling up later in his flashy Audi after spending time speaking to youth at a local Sydney gym. On top of it, his father, Jim Kambosos, doubled down, saying his son was laser-focused on fight prep and had bigger fish to fry.

Meanwhile, the 16-1 boxer isn’t losing sleep over it. Instead of getting rattled, he took it all in stride. “I’ve got him on the back foot already,” Jake Wyllie said with a grin. “I’m not worried at all.” At the end of the day, “All that matters is what happens in the ring.” Anyway, they finally came face-to-face a few hours ago, and judging by the tension in the air, they’re gearing up to put on one hell of a show.

So, will the younger, hungry Jake Wyllie rise to the occasion and take down the seasoned George Kambosos? Or will Kambosos’ experience and ring IQ prove too much for him to handle?
