It’s been nearly a week since Gervonta Davis has been leading the headlines. The 29-year-old world champion from Baltimore marked the beginning of a new and significant chapter in his life. Following in the footsteps of ‘The Greatest’ Muhammad Ali, ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson, and Bernard Hopkins, Davis converted to Islam and received the new name Abdul Wahid.

On December 24, in Woodlawn, Maryland’s Masjid Al-Hidaayah, the lightweight champion’s conversion was officially recognized through the ‘Shahada’ ceremony. Since Gervonta Davis took this pivotal step, he has been inundated with messages overflowing with praise and appreciation. Some of the biggest names in the combat sports world joined in congratulating him. However, judging by Davis’ latest tweet, it seems he is not entirely pleased with how a few might have responded to the news.

Gervonta Davis wrote that, as a human being, everyone goes through changes and evolves every day. But still, the facts remain very challenging for a few to grasp. It’s so bad that sometimes it feels as if it’s near impossible to change in today’s world. “Why people don’t understand you grow everyday…like it’s f****ng impossible to change now days,‘ he said.

 

WBC cruiserweight champion Badou Jack, who, as it appears, initially brought to light the news about Gervonta Davis’s conversion. Among the many who welcomed ‘Tank’ were UFC great Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s team. His manager Ali Abdel Aziz added, “Mashallah,” which in Arabic means, “God has willed it,‘ when a fighter Movsar Evloev messaged, “May Allah make it easy for you and keep you on the straight path. Welcome to Islam, brother @Gervontaa.

The day before yesterday, Khamzat Chimaev, a living legend himself, extended his greetings to Gervonta Davis. Taking to his X/Twitter handle, ‘Borz’ wrote, “Abdul Wahid…Alhamdulillah.

It was in 1964, after the first Sonny Liston fight. Then Cassius Clay decided to follow the path of Islam and became Muhammad Ali. A few decades later, Mike Tyson, too, committed himself to the faith. Among the new generation of fighters, undefeated champion Devin Haney, who was also the former undisputed champion of the lightweight division, also practices Islam.
