Canelo Alvarez defended his undisputed super middleweight title in an impressive show of skills against Jermell Charlo. The daring attempt of climbing two weight classes and facing an undisputed champion left Charlo unable to strike an effective offense and spending most of the fight against the ropes. Charlo was even knocked down in the seventh round. In the end, ‘Cinnamon’ won the fight against Charlo via a unanimous decision.

As Canelo gave a resounding reply to his naysayers, Charlo had to face the setback and the condemnation that came with it. Smith strongly feels that Charlo does not deserve the stick that he received post the bout. He has sympathetically stood up for and broken down the fight from Charlo’s perspective.

The journalist underlined that Charlo had tried to achieve something “great”, adding 14 pounds to fight the ‘Monster’ in unfamiliar territory. “He moved up 2 weight classes, wanted to dare to be great, but then when he stepped in the ring with this monster and he realized he couldn’t hurt him..you d*mn right he was trying to survive! Who the hell wants to get knocked out?!” The most he could do after realizing he had aimed too high was survive and stay put for as long as his body permitted.

Jermell Charlo faces severe criticism from the boxing community

Terence Crawford voiced his criticism post the fight and showed no reciprocation for the enthusiasm with which the younger Charlo twin had called him out for a fight. Oscar De La Hoya has also expressed disappointment in the fight. He called out Charlo for lacking motivation. His own twin, Jermall claims that his kids are getting bullied at school for their uncle’s defeat. Despite the backlash, Charlo has stayed positive and is ready to confront his next opponent on the canvas. He has lauded Canelo’s performance and is not overly critical of himself for the loss.
