Dmitry Bivol is a living embodiment of discipline and precision. He is the perfect example of how skills can flourish if you keep honing them consistently and without any breaks. His sensational victory against Canelo Alvarez and undefeated record of 23-0 while holding the WBA World Light Heavyweight championship turned into a testament to everything he has achieved in the sport.
While he methodically breaks every opponent, he is not the only architect behind those 22 triumphs. Behind every move is a laid-down strategy by his trainer and cornerman. His camp has shaped his raw talent into something that no boxer has gotten out of. Let’s take a look behind the mastermind that has shaped him into a slow assassin in the ring.

The Kyrgyzstan boxer made his professional debut in 2014 and has not changed his coach since then. Gennady Gushianov started training Bivol early in his professional career. He was the reason that Bivol transitioned into professional boxing so seamlessly and then conquered the heavyweight division. Gushianov shares a very deep relationship with his 6’0″ giant student. Bivol has also shared his love for his trainer several times on social media and how easy boxing has been for him because of Gushianov.
Under his guidance, the 23-0 boxer has developed a fast-paced fighting style that complements his sharp footwork and calm personality. He follows a methodical approach and always remains calm and composed in the ring. Gushianov’s experience as a coach and his deep knowledge of the sport has also helped him lay out simple yet complex plans for the WBA champion, allowing him to conquer the world.
Ahead of his fight against Artur Beterbiev, Gushianov is confident of his disciple’s skills and hints at a clear strategy to tackle ‘The Rabbit’s’ power. “We’ve had the answers to every opponent Bivol has faced, and we will for this one too,” stated the Mexican coach, wanting to see Bivol as the next undisputed light heavyweight champion.

Bivol trains in Joel Diaz Training Camp in California’s Coachella Valley. The gym is located in the desert town of Indio, roughly 120 miles away from Los Angeles. Joel Diaz, who trains around 20 professional boxers daily, runs it. Diaz started this camp over two decades ago and has turned it into one of the biggest training gyms in the boxing world.
Bivol likes the isolation of the desert and states, “It’s a good way to stay focused on training,” mentioning how far away he is from all the distractions. This is the war room where Bivol, Diaz, and Gushianov prepare for the battles and make their pinpoint strategies.
The California resident trained here for his fight against Canelo and is preparing for his career-hallmark moment in this gym. Diaz is considered one of the best trainers in the world and has trained several boxers like Israil Madrimov, Antonio Diaz, Timothy Bradley. Even UFC fighters like Cub Swanson and Ruslan Provodnikov.
The Mexican coach who helped Bivol defeat Canelo Alvarez
On May 7, 2022, Bivol defeated Canelo to create one of the biggest upsets in the boxing world. It was not a simple victory, as the Kyrgyzstan-born boxer won by unanimous decision, making him one of the best boxers, without a doubt.

The negotiations for the fight took a considerable amount of time, allowing Gushianov to formulate a plan well in advance. He introduced Bivol to Joel Diaz a year before Canelo’s fight was even finalized and got him accustomed to the Mexican boxing style.
“When Bivol took the fight with Canelo, which was already being talked about for a long time, the manager told me: ‘We are going to bring him here and we want you to teach him the Mexican style’,” stated Diaz while talking about the training route the trio was going to take.
According to Diaz, Bivol and he approached the Mexican style as the “Europeans lack the fang.” The 6’0″ boxer mimicked Canelo in sparring and prepared a training regiment around Bivol’s footwork to ” keep him away with the jab.” The plan worked as after 12 rounds, it was the Russian boxer who stood tall against one of the greatest ever.
