Denys Berinchyk faces an uphill task. On Friday he will defend his hard-earned world championship from a rising star in boxing. Many already seem to know the outcome. With Keyshawn Davis having an 81% chance of winning, Berinchyk will step into the ring as an overwhelming underdog according to betting charts. But the Olympic silver medalist appears undeterred. He will do what needs to be done. There’s more at stake than his title alone.

Given the ongoing challenges facing Ukraine, Denys Berinchyk, like many of his compatriots, is driven to make his fellow countrymen proud. Alongside Oleksandr Usyk and Vasyl Lomachenko, Berinchyk carries the flag of Ukraine’s rich boxing traditions, which have flown high since the Klitschko brothers put the nation on the global boxing map. More so, given that he will turn 37 this year, Berinchyk probably doesn’t have much time left in the sport. So he might as well conclude his innings on a high note. Ahead of the big fight, let’s check a few personal details about the reigning lightweight champion.
