Did Bruce Carrington's tough upbringing make him the fighter he is today, or was it boxing?

Bruce Carrington was only six years old when he saw a murder in front of his eyes; a traumatic event that was numbed down by the harsh nature of Brownsville. Carrington often thanks his parents for not letting him wander to the wrong side and instilling qualities like discipline into him.

Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York, which is an area famous for violence and crimes, and being alive every day was something to be grateful for. That is why the 27-year-old is grateful for his family, who helped him “get away from all of the negativity. ” 

Carrington’s father, Bruce Sr. identified his wasted talent and his hidden rage when he constantly stood up to older bullies and beat them up. He put him into the gym and the Brooklyn boxer fell in love with boxing there.

But his brother, Michael Hayden, was not so lucky as he was shot and killed in 2014. According to the 13-0 boxer, the loss affected him massively. “Around the time he passed, I would say I was on a downhill in my boxing career, in terms of mentally,” said Carrington while talking about his brother’s demise.

But rather than running from the trauma, Carrington made it a driving force behind his motivation and his goal towards life. Rather than being defined by trauma, he wants to bring a positive change to Brownsville and become an inspiration for everyone. He wants to be the next boxer in the world because Hayden wants that.

Carrington learned from a very young age that, ” you can’t blame anybody for your mishaps.” He has always tried to do the right thing no matter how hard that might be. He constantly thanks his father and family for pushing him in the right direction. Something which his religion must have taught him as well.
