The night of June 6 promises thrilling fights. Across the pond, in London, Johnny Fisher and Alen Babic will battle it out. Meanwhile, in New Jersey, Shakur Stevenson will defend his lightweight belt against Artem Harutyunyan. Super featherweight champion O’Shaquie Foster will also enter the ring to defend his title against Robson Conceicao. However, for many fans, the most intriguing line-up might be Jorge Masvidal‘s boxing match against UFC veteran Nate Diaz.

The two former UFC fighters will face off in Anaheim, California’s Honda Center, for a ten-round light heavyweight fight. Nate Diaz made his boxing debut against Jake Paul on August 5 last year. He lost the fight by a unanimous decision. The lead-up to the fight with Masvidal saw the team members enter a free-for-all during one of the press conferences. Bitterness and excitement aside, how do the two raw boxers, who are otherwise expert fighters in an octagon, fare physically against each other? Let’s examine Nate Diaz’s physical readiness for the match.

According to the records, Nate Diaz weighs around 170 pounds. So in a strict sense, he falls below the required weight limits of the light heavyweight division. However, his weight could vary by the final weigh-in. Then one has to consider that there is time until the fight to add more pounds. So Nate Diaz’s actual weight at the time of the bout may actually go through considerable changes.

It is worth noting that Diaz’s last boxing match against ‘The Problem Child’ was a cruiserweight bout. Both he and the Ohioan came off at 185 pounds. So in the Masvidal showdown, there is a slump of 10 pounds if one goes by the prescribed weight limits only. However, there’s a slight difference in perspective altogether on how Nate Diaz comes up for the fight.

Last year, in preparation for the Paul fight, Diaz tied up with Olympic silver medalist and professional boxer Esquiva Falcao. While exchanging shots with Nate Diaz, the Brazilian middleweight challenger seemingly had the impression that the American mixed martial specialist appeared to be a much bigger fighter than he actually was.

Like most, he also made the gross mistake of thinking that the former UFC fighter was tired and weary. However, the sparring continued. From the initial 10 rounds, they ended with two more. So Falcao said, “He was landing shots and eating a lot of shots, too. It’s bad. He is heavy now; he’s overweight. He must weigh about 220 pounds now or more. So the only big guy here at the gym is me. So I ended up having spar him. I enjoyed doing it, though.

But a close review of Diaz’s mixed martial arts reveals that he mostly fought in the two divisions—lightweight and welterweight. So give and take a few; it is tantamount to a walking weight of 150–160 pounds for the Jiu-Jitsu black belt. Hence, overcoming those constraints to fight at 185–175 pounds is undoubtedly a commendable feat.

Standing at 6 feet, Nate Diaz definitely stands taller by an inch than Jorge Masvidal, who is 5 feet and eleven inches. Likewise, the former enjoys an edge when it comes to the reach as well, which is around 76 inches or 193 centimeters, as opposed to the ‘Gamebred’s 74 inches or 188 centimeters.

Despite all the details, many would find it surprising to find that, Jorge Masvidal enjoys a slight edge as the favorite to fight tomorrow’s fight. Per available sources, the Miami-born ‘Gamebred’ has -250 odds of winning the fight against Nate Diaz.

One of the highlights of tomorrow’s fight night in Anaheim is the huge card that is sure to keep the fans and followers on the edge of their seats. It boasts a super middleweight clash between Shane Mosley Jr. and Daniel Jacobs. Then the scions of two well-known boxing families, Amado Vargas, son of former world champion Fernando Vargas, and Sean Garcia, Ryan Garcia‘s younger brother, will face off in a light-weight bout. Then another Stockton-born MMA fighter turned boxer, Chris Avila, will take on Anthony Pettis for a light heavyweight match.
