Vasyl Lomachenko arguably has the most alluring amateur record in boxing history. The Ukrainian star amassed 396 wins and several medals in his amateur ride, losing only once in 2007.

Russian boxer Albert Selimov was the only fighter to beat ‘The Matrix’ when they locked horns in the World Amateur Championship finals in Chicago. Selimov picked apart Lomachenko by a decision of 16-11 and took home the gold medal. It was shocking to see Lomachenko lose his undefeated record as an amateur.

Well, the man to beat Lomachenko became very popular back then. However, Selimov now is nowhere near boxing glory. Who is Vasyl Lomachenko’s former opponent, Albert Selimov?

Although several reports claim him to be a Russian, Box Rec cites Selimov to be a resident of Azerbaijan now. He was born on April 5, 1986, in Kaspiysk, Russia, and has represented his motherland on several big stages before taking the nationality of Azerbaijan.

He is 5′ 7 ½” tall and has a southpaw stance. While Selimov never became a pro-boxer, he has had a stellar and long amateur career.

The 35-year-old holds a record of 114 wins with 23 losses and has 2 stoppage victories under his name. All of this happened between 2007-2016 in less than a decade. While Selimov retired after that, his win against Vasyl Lomachenko is still one of the most talked-about factors in boxing.
