Are big names like Canelo avoiding real competition? What's your take on the Munguia fight fallout?

Canelo Alvarez once cost David Benavidez a fight, as his camp flirted with the idea of a potential fight and pitched it to Jose Benavidez Sr. However, as they know, it never amounted to anything, leaving the father-son duo with a bad taste in their mouth and a potential fight with Jaime Munguia in tatters. How did it happen?

Alvarez, 34, and Benavidez, 27, should have collided inside the boxing ring by now, as the latter held the WBC interim super middleweight title for over 2 years. But the Mexican champion never paid heed to what the challenger brought to the table and had his picks. The saga of callouts and dodging went on for years before the super middleweight champion’s camp decided to test the waters and the resolve of Benavidez Sr.

The Benavidez family patriarch detailed the incident when he appeared in a conversation with Fight Hub TV. He narrated that they were in negotiations with Munguia, 27, for a fight. But as they were ironing out the details, the Alvarez camp reached out to him and offered him the fight. But with minimum pay on the offer. But ‘The Mexican Monster’ and he wanted the fight, so they agreed.

He said, “We’re in negotiations to fight Munguia, and then they reach up to us, you know. They say, ‘Ok, Canelo is going to fight David. But we’re just going to pay you the minimum. That’s it. Don’t ask for no money.’ I don’t even care. I don’t even, to be honest, I heard that right away, I said, ‘Yeah, sure, no problem.’ ‘Don’t ask for anything more. That’s it.'”

“I said, ‘Yeah, sure. We’ll fight for the minimum. Like I said, I didn’t even know, I didn’t really care. We wanted the opportunity, and then they never call back again,” Benavidez Sr. added. As he believed, they wanted to use the money angle to use it as an excuse to avoid the fight altogether. Eventually, Alvarez, at 61-2-2, fought Munguia, and his son, David, made a switch to 175. With Alvarez now fighting Edgar Berlanga, Benavidez Sr. knows whom to support.

Benavidez Sr., in the same conversation, admitted he liked the challenger and wanted him to topple Alvarez so that other fighters could have a shot at the top. He said, “I like him [Edgar Berlanga]. I like him, like I said, you know, I like him. The only other reason that I want him to beat Canelo [is] so all these other fighters can have opportunities to fight for those belts. I feel that Canelo has this belts hostage for a long time.”

Alvarez will defend his unified titles against Berlanga on September 14 at T-Mobile Arena. It remains to be seen whether he can make a successful defense of his gold straps once again.
