In an interview with FightHype, Floyd Mayweather revealed that he sparred with young Haney even before 2020. It was around the time when he was preparing for the last fight of his career against Conor McGregor. He called him “hell of a fighter” and Haney didn’t disappoint the legend in just four rounds of sparring.
Mayweather said, “We only did like probably 4 rounds because I wasn’t in no shape. Devin Haney, sharp skills, great boxer.” Then he stated that no matter what anybody says, the boxing gym is for the betterment of the boxers, and not for competition. So, it doesn’t matter if somebody goes through 30 bad days in the gym, but what happens on the fight night is the only thing that matters.
Mayweather agreed to the fact that sparring with Haney at that time, got him battle ready for fight night.

In the same interview, Mayweather further shared his opinions on the people who boast about their fighters based on a result of a sparring session. This doesn’t make any sense to Floyd Mayweather as it’s part of the training and it’s to get better rather than competition. He said, “When I’m in the gym most of the time, I’m there to grow and to get better and help guys get better.”

Moreover, he stated, “Just me being 40 years old working with a young youthful fighter like Devin, it made even for the Conor McGregor fight.”
Moreover, Mayweather remarked that if he worked hard, he would’ve ended the bout in just 2 or 3 rounds but that wouldn’t have been fun for the audience.
