The WBO President believes in equality and a fair chance. On March 2nd, Amanda Serrano, the undisputed featherweight champion, will make a triumphant return to her native Puerto Rico for a title defense against IBF mandatory challenger Nina Meinke. This highly anticipated fight will take place in the iconic Coliseo de Puerto Rico, marking it as a homecoming celebration for Serrano.
Serrano will be looking to extend her reign atop the division. This fight will be her second at the 12×3 round format, the standard for men’s championship fights, demonstrating her commitment to pushing boundaries and advocating for equality in the sport. Well, this couldn’t have happened without the approval of the WBO President, and he has recently broken the silence about his thoughts on Serrano’s upcoming fight.

The world is aware that this decision was quite important for Serrano, as it spoke hugely about equality among male and female boxers. She was so adamant about fighting the way she desired that she even relinquished her WBC belt due to WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman‘s stance against women competing in 12×3 contests. Luckily for her, WBO President Francisco Valcarcel doesn’t feel the same way about these rules.
In an interview with FightHype, Valcarcel stated, “I think that we have to give the opportunity to the female fighters, to show that they can do it like man and they can make money like men. And this is- we are talking about equality, that’s that’s important. We have to be fair and fear we approve rules in which we allow the fighter to decide.” Furthermore, he continued, “If they want to fight two or three rounds, both the commission have to approve that and the doctors who make the physical have to approve that before.”
Well, Serrano is quite excited to fight among her people and has talked about her excitement while commending her opponent for agreeing to join her on the journey. She will be fighting in the main event of the night, with Jake Paul fighting in the co-main event.
