Is Canelo Alvarez dodging Beterbiev to protect his legacy, or is it a strategic move?

Back in February, Canelo Alvarez shut down all the rumors surrounding him regarding his retirement. The super middleweight unified champion stated that he will be active for at least five more years to a joyous reception. But as the announcement came right after Canelo signed a deal with TV Azteca, speculation began whether this is a new chapter or the end of an era is near.

Well, boxing promoter Rick Glaser touched upon the worst fears of the fans as he dismissed the rumors of a possible Artur Beterbiev clash. On his ‘X’ account, Glaser talked about how this might be the last hurrah of Canelo’s run and closed doors on many dream fights.

According to Glaser, Canelo would never consider a fight with Beterbiev, no matter what anyone says. “No one should mention #Canelo fighting #ArturBeterbiev, as it’s not a fight Canelo would even consider taking,” said the promoter. He then proceeded to talk about how Alvarez even dodged David Benavidez and stated, “Canelo didn’t take a #DavidBenavidez fight, he’s definitely not going to fight #Beterbiev either.” Even the 62-2-2 boxer himself has stated in the past that he does not see the urgency to fight Benavidez and will not make the decision according to fan demands.

Glaser then proceeded to talk about the inevitable and mentioned that the “Hall of Framer is now 34.” According to him, no matter how hard Canelo tries, he is going to be retiring sooner rather than later, and even the Hall of Famer knows that. Because of that, he is going to cherry-pick his next fights to not affect his legacy and record negatively.

He then stated that not even an insane amount of money can force Canelo to fight an opponent. Glaser mentioned the example of Terence Crawford and how the Guadalajara native ignored the fight even after the involvement of His Excellency Turki Alalshikh.

The promoter then proceeds to mention the worst fears of the fans. He stated, “We’re now in the #CaneloAlvarez farewell tour,” implying that retirement is near no matter how much we deny it. He let everyone know that Alvarez’s decisions at this stage might disappoint boxing enthusiasts, but it is a reality that everyone has to accept.

But even if Canelo Alvarez is nearing retirement and does not want to affect his legacy, there is one big fight that he desperately wants. A rematch to rectify one of his two losses, and he is hellbent on doing that.

A clash with destiny

Right after ‘Cinnamon’s’ win against Edgar Berlanga back in September, reports started flowing that he wanted a rematch with Dmitry BivolThe reports further stated that Canelo is seeking a rematch for his May 2025 date given that Bivol defeated Beterbiev.

In an interview before the undisputed light heavyweight match, Bivol acknowledged the challenge. But he brushed his aside, stating, “I don’t think about Canelo because I have my fight,” putting all his focus behind Beterbiev. The 23-1 boxer also revealed that he desired the rematch against Canelo but grew tired of waiting. “It was only talks and nothing actions, nothing any negotiations at all. It’s just a closed subject,” Bivol told the reporter while talking about the lack of action from Canelo’s side.

As Bivol suffered his first defeat of his professional career against Beterbiev, the talks of the rematch faded away. Maybe Canelo might be avoiding other opponents, but we all know that this is a match that is bound to happen, and the Guadalajara native will do everything to make it happen. After all, this is the only redeemable mark in his career that he desperately wants to avenge.
