After 25 years, on the 18th of May, at Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk, the sport of boxing will witness an undisputed Heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis. On that note, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman wants to make sure that controversies do not end up stigmatizing one of the biggest events in boxing, Fury vs. Usyk.

As a result, the 54-year-old wants to take aid from advanced technology during the fight. In this regard, Mauricio Sulaiman mentioned the lesson he learned from Charlie Edwards vs. Julio Cesar Martinez. Here is what he said.

In 2019, when Charlie Edwards faced Julio Cesar Martinez with the WBC Flyweight title on the line, the fight ended in no contest. In the third round, after Martinez attacked Edwards, the latter took a knee. However, to quote Tom Gray, Martinez unexpectedly hit Edwards with a left hand to the body which was “ridiculously late“. Since Martinez’s punch was not accidental, several people questioned the fight being dubbed a no contest. To avoid such controversial decisions at Tyson Fury vs. Usyk, Mauricio Sulaiman hopes to reckon on instant replay.

The WBC has had instant replay for 12 years. We have a protocol, we have a clear process on how to do things. It is mostly intended for fight-ending situations that are controversial,” Sulaiman told Boxing Social.

I was here when Charlie Edwards fought with Martinez. And while the referee ruled one way, the giant screens in the arena, in the stadium, and the millions of people watching television were looking at what really happened,” he added.

It is nonsense. It is unacceptable not to use technology to have a fair result, a just result, and to avoid controversy,” Sulaiman, who thinks Fury vs. Usyk is now bigger, emphasized. “It’s just a matter of doing our best when the replay is completely giving you the right decision,” he concluded.
