The fight between Fury and Oleksandr Usyk was slated to take place this month in Saudi Arabia but after Tyson Fury ended up with a cut above his eye, the fight was soon rescheduled to 18 May. However, the WBC president has a unique suggestion for the biggest fight in the heavyweight division.

After 25 years, the heavyweight division will have an undisputed champion. Thus, Mauricio Sulaiman wants to take extra steps to ensure things remain fair.

The World Boxing Council (WBC) is proposing a change for the upcoming heavyweight championship clash between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk. The organization wants to increase the number of judges ringside from the usual three to potentially five or even six.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman believes this is crucial for such a high-profile fight. He stated, “Now we have the biggest fight in 25 years in the heavyweight division. So we have to try to do our best.” He stressed the importance of minimizing controversy, especially in a bout of this magnitude.

Sulaiman acknowledges the traditional resistance to change in boxing but remains optimistic about the proposal’s potential. He explains, “We do have a remote scoring system… We have found through fights done in this system that the more officials that score a fight, the less possibility of a wrong decision.”

Usyk is prepared in case Fury tries to back away once again

Oleksandr Usyk’s camp is prepared for any scenario as the heavyweight showdown with Fury approaches. While both fighters are locked in with a hefty financial penalty for withdrawal, a backup plan ensures the show goes on.

Usyk’s trainer, Sergey Lapin, expressed hope for the fight to proceed in May but acknowledged a contingency. “We have a clause to replace Fury with Filip Hrgovic if he withdraws again,” Lapin revealed, confirming Hrgovic as the designated substitute. Fury’s withdrawal, just weeks before the original fight date, was due to a sparring injury. Lapin, however, questioned Fury’s durability, suggesting Hrgovic could pose a significant threat. “Imagine what will happen when he faces Usyk’s power,” he remarked.

Lapin expressed confidence in Usyk, claiming Fury has never faced an opponent of his caliber. He went on to criticize Fury’s recent performances, suggesting the champion might be past his prime.
