American boxer Prichard Colon had a bright future ahead of him in the sport. However, his life would change in 2015 after he fought Terrell Williams. Coming into the fight, Colon held a record of 16-0. Moreover, 13 of his 16 victories were by the way of knockouts in the ring. During the Williams fight, Colon went down twice in round nine, claiming that the punches were illegal. He lost the fight via a DQ and suffered a “bleed to brain” as he left the ring.

Later, it was revealed that his brain suffered irreversible damage, resulting in him being paralyzed. Although it is unlikely Colon will ever compete in the ring again, but that has not stopped him from trying to improve his condition. In a heartwarming video, the boxer can be seen slipping punches from his sister, who was trying to train and inspire him to better himself.

Before Colon’s tragic paralysis, he was touted as the next superstar in boxing. He was a gold medal winner at the 2010 Panamerican Youth Championship. In addition, he is the honorary WBC World Champion. The sport of boxing is a ruthless one and Colon is the perfect example of how this sport can cause permanent damage to a person, not only affecting the athlete but also the people surrounding him.
Deontay Wilder breaks down in tears while discussing Prichard Colon
Following his KO victory over Robert Helenius, Deontay Wilder seemingly broke down in sympathy for his opponent. In the post-fight press conference, Wilder addressed the dangers of boxing stating that although Helenius might be well now, but could suffer later on like Colon.
“He’s alright now, but what about tomorrow? – What about two weeks from now? And we’ve seen what happened. Look at Colon, Prichard Colon. This man didn’t have any kids. And I don’t even know him like that, but I’ll always be an advocate for us.” said Wilder.
