There is a famous saying in combat sports, “protect yourself at all times”. Floyd Mayweather Jr. proved this to be true after he once infamously sucker punched former WBC welterweight champion, Victor Ortiz, back in 2011. Although the punch was legal in the boxing rulebook, it was still a taboo in the sport.

This infamous KO added to Mayweather’s list of controversies and is still considered one of the most controversial punches in boxing. However, it seems like a similar situation might just put ‘Money’s’ incident to shame. A video recently surfaced on the internet of a Glory Kickboxing match. In the video, one fighter suddenly stops fighting and turned his back on the opponent, which resulted in him getting knocked out by a devastating sucker punch from behind.

Moreover, this seemed unusual for the fighter, as there were still 2 minutes and 42 seconds left in the round. The punch was also not well received by the knocked-out fighter’s camp, who went on to attack the puncher. This was not all, as fans also voiced their opinion on the controversial sucker punch.

Fans react to the sucker punch knockout

One fan stated that although this was fair according to the rules, this was not good sportsmanship. “Fair play but no honor and respect in that punch,” he wrote. Another fan also stated that this was not great sportsmanship on the fighter’s part. “As a real sportsman, you should never do it.” he wrote

However, some fans came in support of the fighter who initiated the sucker punch. One fan raised the question of the fighter choosing to turn his back despite more than 2 minutes being left in the round. “there was 2 minutes left on the clock y did he walk away” he wrote. Moreover, one fan rightly pointed out the first rule of combat sports. “Protect yourself at all times,” he wrote. Lastly, one fan hilariously stated that the fighter must have heard the bell ring in his head and decided to walk towards his corner. ” Bro just randomly walks away maybe he heard the bell in his head.”

These kinds of punches have long been debated for a long time in the sport of boxing. While many feel that if the rulebook allows it, then there should be no social stigma around it and others think that these punches are not in the spirit of the sport.
