Floyd Mayweather has been ‘the face of boxing’ for over a decade boasting an incredible career and flamboyant personality making him one of the greatest fighters of all time. However, it’s not just his prowess in the ring that has earned him a place in the history books, but also his shrewd business sense.

One of ‘Money’ Mayweather’s most celebrated achievements to date is his decision to buy himself out of his Top Rank contract. This gamble was seen as a genius move, not just for the amount of money he eventually made, but for the control it gave him over his career. Mayweather’s contract with his former promotion had a unique opt-out clause, that allowed him to get released for $750,000. He would then enforce this clause in 2006, parting ways with Top Rank and becoming an independent boxer.

The following year Mayweather would go on to face Oscar De La Hoya in the biggest fight of his career, at that point. The former champion would then have multiple fights which crossed over a million PPV including his bouts with Conor McGregor and Manny Pacquiao. To this day, even Mayweather thinks that this move was the one that changed his life. He recently claimed that his three fights after the contract earned him a whopping $750 million.
