In his Instagram account, Lopez posted a video capturing the impromptu confrontation, Richardson Hitchins declared with an assertive grin, “He knows I ain’t Josh Taylor”.  Undoubtedly it was a declaration laden with the confidence of someone ready to ascend to the pinnacle of the sport.

Teofimo Lopez, unfazed but equally assertive, responded, “He’s got to deal with my boy Antwon first. Where’s my boy Tweezy at?” The exchange resonated through the gym, setting the stage for a verbal joust that would spill beyond the confines of the training space.

The drama didn’t stop at the gym doors. An Instagram post from Hitchins painted a vivid picture of the encounter. “He definitely wouldn’t want to give me my shot. Y’all tell Him.  Let’s make It Happen I need my Shot Now !” “And you’re not from Brooklyn; you’re a Florida kid. Don’t claim my city. I’m the king of this sh*t.”

Additionally, the post reverberated across social media platforms. Further turning the spotlight on a potential clash between the reigning king and the hungry contender. It wasn’t just about the punches thrown or the titles at stake; it was a collision of personalities, a narrative that transcended the boundaries of the ring. However, one question remains. Why would a young pugilist, who had a mentor like Floyd Mayweather Jr, not want to be associated with him anymore?

Richardson leaves Mayweather Promotions

Richardson Hitchins, once a hopeful prospect under Mayweather Promotions, was dissatisfied with the trajectory of his career since signing with the company in 2017. Despite a flawless 13-0 record, Hitchins felt neglected, attributing his lack of opportunities to a perceived lack of faith from Mayweather in his potential star power.

Initially, Hitchins and Mayweather Promotions seemed like a perfect match, with the New York native staying active with multiple fights per year. However, since 2019, his activity dwindled, leaving him on the sidelines. Hitchins, now 25, seeks more visibility, feeling ready to take on the top fighters in the 140-pound division.

Hitchins touted that Mayweather Promotions focused more on fighters like Gervonta “Tank” Davis, he tried to urge Mayweather to prioritize his development. Despite only 13 professional bouts, Hitchins believed he can not only compete but beat the best at 140 pounds. His victories against Malik Hawkins and former world titlist Argenis Mendez attest to his readiness for higher-profile challenges.

In Hitchins’ eyes, the key to reaching his full potential lies in increased activity and visibility. He insisted that if Mayweather Promotions invested in him, the world will recognize his status as an upper-echelon fighter. As he continues honing his skills behind the scenes, Hitchins remains confident that when the spotlight finally shines on him, his capabilities will speak volumes, potentially elevating him to stardom in the competitive world of boxing. In the end, Hitchins ultimately left Mayweather Promotions and joined Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom.
