Vergil Ortiz Jr. continued his undefeated streak with a vicious knockout of Maurice Hooker. The 22-year-old improved his record to 17-0 after he dismantled the former champion in round seven. Here’s a recap of the incredible fight they treated us to.

The two fought as the main event of a stacked card in a bout that was Ortiz Jr.’s first big test. Hooker came into the bout with the experience of being a former world champion; Ortiz Jr. came in as the more dangerous fighter.

How did the fight between Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Maurice Hooker pan out?
The bout began in fifth gear as both fighters went at it from the first bell. Surprisingly, Hooker initiated the attack by throwing his snappy jab. However, this allowed Ortiz Jr. to counter, and he enjoyed a lot of success. As a result, the first few rounds were very close and entertaining.
As the fight progressed past the third round, Hooker enjoyed more success. His game plan became obvious, and the former champion relied on his powerful jab to keep Ortiz Jr. at bay while landing combinations. Ortiz Jr. found himself in an unfamiliar position and struggled to find a rhythm.

However, Ortiz Jr. found his rhythm in the 6th round and dropped ‘Mighty Mo’ with a flurry of powerful punches. The undefeated 22-year-old realized the punches to the body hurt Hooker and used it to significant effect.
How did the fight end?
The fight ended in the seventh round after Ortiz Jr. dropped Hooker in the first ten seconds of the period with a vicious body shot. However, this time it appeared the former champion injured his hand in the exchange. As a result, the referee waved off the fight, and Ortiz Jr. claimed a T/KO over Hooker.

Therefore, Ortiz Jr. passed his first big test with flying colors. Although he found himself in difficult situations, he showed maturity to weather the storm, and ultimately got the knockout victory.
