Is Mike Tyson's underdog status a disrespect to his legacy, or a fair assessment of his chances?

The Jake PaulMike Tyson fight is set to be one of the biggest events the world has ever seen. Netflix and MVP have invested everything in this event, and they predict it will shatter the viewership record for a boxing event. Furthermore, the event will also feature the highest purse ever in women’s boxing as Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor will rematch for Taylor’s undisputed super lightweight title.

Well, it looks like those are not the only records that this event is going to break. Just a few days before the fight, several reports came out that show that the Paul-Tyson fight might shatter every existing betting record. The really surprising thing is that judging from the numbers, Jake Paul is seen as a heavy favorite in the bout.

Director of Communications at BetMGM, John Ewing, took to X and stated that they are expecting the upcoming fight on November 15 to break all the betting records in their books. He wrote, “We expect the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson fight to be the most bet on boxing match in BetMGM history.” Ewing is a prominent sportsbook operator and has often provided insights into trends and betting data for various sporting events. Most of the time, his predictions are often right, so this fight might seriously have the potential to break all the records.

The 2017 fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas currently tops the list of the most bet-on boxing matches ever, drawing an estimated $400 million in global wagers, with around $65 million bet in Nevada alone. If the reports from the betting aggregators are true, Jake Paul-Mike Tyson will very well, beat Mayweather-McGregor to earn the top spot.

Ewing further highlighted the patterns of bettors for the Paul-Tyson fight and gave further insights. According to BetMGM, the bookmakers in Vegas are rooting for Jake Paul heavily. “Bettors want to see Paul get knocked out and love Tyson as an underdog. The book will be rooting for Paul to win,” added Ewing. BetMGM lists Paul as a -190 favorite, while they list Tyson as a +188 underdog. This means that a Mike Tyson victory would cause bettors to make significant payouts, and with this scale of betting, many could face a potential financial loss if Jake loses.

Changing Tides: Mike Tyson is an underdog

Caesars Sportsbook has also released a similar statement. According to Caesars, the numbers are predicting Jake Paul to take home the victory. DraftKings’ director of sports Johnny Avello too stated, “We have seen substantial action on the fight already and expect it to be a heavily-bet event.”

One of the biggest combat sports oddsmakers, Brandon Yaeger, stated that Mike Tyson would rule the first few rounds of the fight because of his power. But after that “he will be too gassed, and his age will start to show on the back half of the fight.” It is the truth that Tyson is participating in this match at a clear disadvantage. He is old, has been out of the ring for far too long and his health is deteriorating.
