Interesting news has emerged that the former three-weight world champion Vasyl Lomachenko had a shoulder injury going into the unification bout with Teofimo Lopez. Kevin Iole from Yahoo sports was first to report the news. He spoke to Lomachenko’s team and found out that the Ukrainian had surgery after the fight on his shoulder.
Reports suggest the surgery took place on the same shoulder that has troubled Lomachenko in the past. The southpaw underwent a major procedure after the Jorge Linares fight, where he dislocated his shoulder. However, the doctor, Dr. Neal S. ElAttrache said that the procedure was not as serious as the previous one and ‘The Matrix’ could return to fitness again by January.

ElAttrache revealed that Lomachenko complained about the pain in his shoulder while throwing the right hook. He said, “When he came in from Ukraine for his last stages of preparation for the fight, he was having some difficulty with the shoulder. It turns out… he’d badly bruised the rotator cuff and badly bruised the bone where the rotator cuff attaches to the shoulder. That was roughly six weeks before the fight and we got him to where he was comfortable enough to train OK, but it continued to cause him pain”.
The Doctor also said that because of this pain, they had to treat the boxer before the fight. He confirmed that Lomachenko had to take an injection into the shoulder to make it to the ring fight. This could explain why ‘The Matrix‘ went with the game plan he did.
Is Vasyl Lomachenko’s injury affecting his future?
ElAttrache allayed fears of the injury hampering the boxer’s career despite it hampering his performance on Saturday. He said, “The things we did for him after the first surgery made him pain-free and his shoulder stable enough that he could go and win a couple of championships after that surgery.”

The doctor then added that he did not expect Lomachenko to have any limitations or repeat surgeries or worse prognosis in the future.
