After staying on the sidelines for a year, Gervonta Davis proved why he is the face of boxing by sending Frank Martin crashing onto the canvas like a bag of potatoes. Immediately after, the community was flooded with speculations about his next opponent. Main contenders—Isaac Cruz, Ryan Garcia and Vasyl Lomachenko!
While Ryan Garcia is out of the question after his ban, the Ukrainian southpaw has emerged as the most likely opponent for the Baltimore native. On top of that, Lomachenko’s promoter has suggested a fight is close to finalizing for November or December this year. So, Marcos Villegas of Fight Hub TV caught up with former champion and boxing coach Robert Garcia to get his predictions for the fight.

Garcia thinks if this fighter can fight smart, he could pull it off
Gervonta Davis is the WBA lightweight champion and Vasyl Lomachenko collected his IBF title after the destruction of George Kambosos Jr., proving he still got what it takes. However, Robert Garcia feels Lomachenko might be a little too old for The Baltimore puncher. Garcia said, “I think five or six years ago, I would have picked Lomachenko right away. Right now, it might be too hard. I think at his age, his size is also because he is not that big of a lightweight… I think I will have to favor Tank”.

However, despite crediting Davis’ unbelievable power, Garcia explained that ‘Loma’ has skills that are unmatched, adding, “Loma is the one who will not be afraid of him. Loma is the one who will be in great shape”. So, Garcia suggested if Lomachenko strategizes and “he fights smart” to win the first couple of rounds and keep the momentum going in the later rounds, he has “a chance he could pull it off”.
Lomachenko didn’t just defeat Kambosos, he brawled with Devin Haney last year in an extremely close fight, which ended with a unanimous decision in Haney’s favor. However, many believed Lomachenko had done enough to win the fight. Comparing that to Davis’ assault on Martin, Davis does have an edge of ‘Loma’, but styles make fights, and Lomachenko’s technical skills might just get him the victory. Meanwhile, Shakur Stevenson has revealed the only way Lomachenko could win.

Shakur Stevenson thinks it will be a tremendous fight
Stevenson, also Top Tank’s fighter, who also thinks Gervonta Davis might not get the fight, but he seems to have revealed how Lomachenko can get the better of his rival if they do end up fighting. “I don’t think that Lomachenko is a pushover even though he is older. With the experience he’s got and the knowledge, I think it could be a tremendous fight”, Shakur Stevenson told Fight Hype.

As to how Lomachenko can defeat the Baltimore native, Stevenson feels the Ukrainian should be able to withstand Davis’ power. He added, “All is gonna boil down to can Lomachenko have punch resistance to what ‘Tank’ is throwing?” As seen in most of Davis’ fights, Davis pushes the fight into the final gear in the later rounds, landing fast and heavy. And Stevenson’s strategy might actually work, like it partially did for Isaac Cruz, who pushed Davis to his very limits while enduring big shots.
