While the chances of a rematch with Dmitry Bivol might still linger, even if he wants, in all probability, Canelo Alvarez may not get the opportunity to undo the setback of 2013, when Floyd Mayweather Jr. inflicted his first career loss. So how to get back against the all-time great? Perhaps by facing and defeating the man Mayweather Jr. stopped—Conor McGregor.
The latest reports reveal Canelo Alvarez might be favorably disposed to a faceoff against McGregor. Both Mayweather Jr. and McGregor clashed seven years ago. Perhaps Alvarez believes that instead of the ten rounds that Mayweather Jr. took, he might wrap up the whole business with the MMA legend within the early rounds. It may further support the argument that boxing reigns supreme. The super middleweight champion is all set to meet Edgar Berlanga on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena. He joins the fight after his last undisputed title defense against Jaime Munguia.

Canelo Alvarez in an interview seemed quite tuned in with the idea of a match against Conor McGregor. So the super middleweight champion was responding to a query. “You and Conor McGregor have been going back and forth in recent months; fighting him would be a mega event. Are you open to fighting Conor McGregor next year?” Manouk Akopyan asked Canelo.
‘Yes, why not?” responded Alvarez. For many, it would be a momentous MMA versus boxing clash. So in a fight with the ‘Notorious,’ he would get an opportunity to demonstrate boxing has the upper hand. “Easy, easy. Way easy money,” Canelo added further. Akopyan persisted. He wanted to know how much time it would take him to bring the fight to its logical end.

Smiling, Canelo Alvarez stressed emphatically, “At the time I want.” According to him, the match may wind up in the manner he prefers. If not the opening round, it would take perhaps another two to inflict a second boxing defeat on McGregor, Alvarez insisted.
Now, as most fans know, the beef between Conor McGregor and Canelo Alvarez is not a new one. One need only go back a year ago. Taking up the now classic 2013 clash with Mayweather Jr., the ‘Notorious’ pointed out how he outperformed Canelo Alvarez, landing more punches on the 50-0 icon. Not allowing the remarks to slide away easily, Alvarez shot back, “I just need one hand with you, and I don’t need to throw so many punches 🤣.”

Where does it stand? If possible
Conor McGregor hasn’t returned to the Octagon since his second loss to Dustin Poirier in 2021. Later reports came that a fight with Michael Chandler for a June showdown has been scheduled. Unfortunately, a toe injury resulted in the fight being canceled.
The McGregor-Mayweather Jr. fight entered records books as the second highest-grossing fight of all time. Considering where Canelo Alvarez stands today, the intrigue surrounding McGregor’s return, and the kind of equation the two share, a potential matchup stands every chance of a sellout. More so, given a fight with David Benavidez or Terence Crawford appearing bleak, a fight with the ‘Notorious’ might prove a solid business move.

But then there’s always the looming question of the weight. The McGregor-Mayweather Jr. fight was a light middleweight affair. So if the match ever reaches negotiations, will McGregor be willing to fight at super middleweight? Recent reports suggest his current walk-around weight is above 180 pounds. So would he be willing for a catchweight fight? What about Alvarez? Some interesting questions. But fans for sure would be more than willing to spend their hard-earned money to buy the tickets for this spectacle.
