In the latest episode of FLAGRANT, in the presence of comedian Andrew Schulz, UFC veteran Chael Sonnen made bold claims regarding Floyd Mayweather Jr.‘s income in the fight business. According to Sonnen, Mayweather never actually made $100 million from a fight. Although there are reports available online, Sonnen believes Mayweather never got remotely close to $100 million from a fight in boxing.

Therefore, as per Sonnen, these online reports are false and the statement which claims Mayweather to be a billionaire is simultaneously questionable. According to Sonnen, the numbers that Mayweather and online reports reiterate are reasonably impossible in a sport like boxing. Thus, Chael Sonnen said, “You’ll see reports like you mentioned 100 million for Floyd. The reports are 130. First off, he never got $1oo million for a fight and is not even remotely close. but there is a report of 130, there are reports online that Floyd’s a billionaire.”

According to Forbes, Mayweather was the highest-paid athlete in 2018 and has a net worth of $285 million. However, Sonnen feels otherwise. “There’s a report that he was the highest-paid athlete this year, and in this year, and in this year. Over Cristiano Ronaldo,” Sonnen exclaimed. On being asked if he thought the entirety represented “bullsh*t”, Sonnen answered in the affirmative.

Why does Chael Sonnen think Floyd Mayweather never earned $100 million from a fight?

Chael Sonnen, who claims to have worked with Oregon State Athletic Commission as an inspector, strongly asserted that he knows the fight business. According to him, the highest figure that Mayweather, who recently had a 16-minute “heist” in London, ever made was $60 million from a fight. Sonnen asserted, “And there are public companies. They do business with HBO, Would be one of them to find an executive to back the claim. It’s never happened. And it won’t be. I know the fight business.

Being a promoter himself, Sonnen claimed he has been on every single side of the business. “I’ve been in the fight business my whole life. I’m a promoter right now, I worked with the commission. I mean I’ve been on every single side of this. I think that Floyd, he’s probably made about 60 million before in one night which is a crazy number,” he added. Therefore, going by his observations, Mayweather never made as large a figure as $100 million from an event. “These 100 and 130 million, just didn’t happen,” Sonnen concluded.
