Manchester’s own Tyson Fury is gearing up for his rematch against Oleksandr Usyk this weekend in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Initially scheduled for October 2024, the rematch had to be postponed to December 21st. Now, Fury would seek to redeem himself after the Ukrainian handed him his first-ever professional loss in his entire boxing career.

Tyson Fury has been an unmovable heavyweight for the duration of his boxing career. Having amassed an outstanding 34-1 record, The Manchester native has certainly done justice to his father, Jon Fury’s decision to name him after Mike Tyson. But that record did not come without the support and dedication of Fury’s team toward him. So, let’s have a look at the people behind ‘The Gypsy King’s professional success.

Javan Hill, largely known as SugarHill Steward, is one of the most popular boxing trainers out there, but his claim to fame has been his association with Tyson Fury. Prior to 2019, the former WBC heavyweight champion used to train with Ben Davison, but things went downhill by the end of the last decade. Fury decided that it was best to part ways with his former trainer because his routine had gone ‘stale’ compared to today’s standards.

In came SugarHill Steward, which was an unexpected move. Why? Because Steward didn’t have a coterie of big-name boxers as clients at that time. Initially, he had talks with Tyson Fury for a different role in his team but was later appointed as his trainer-cum-head coach. In fact, training boxers is in Steward’s lineage because he’s the nephew of the legendary trainer, Emanuel Steward.

The important thing to note here is that Tyson Fury has mentioned many times that his relationship with SugarHill Steward is more personal than professional. “He’s not just my trainer, he’s my friend. We’re like family,” Fury stated in the past. Now, let’s move to the other side and explore the details of ‘The Gypsy King’s management team.

Who is Tyson Fury’s promoter and manager?

Tyson Fury initially fought under promoter Mick Hennessy, CEO of Hennessy Sports – a relationship that dates back to 2008. But guess what? That longstanding relationship came to an end in 2018 when ‘The Gypsy King’ decided to return that year after a layoff and fight under veteran promoter, Frank Warren.

The reason behind Fury and Henessy’s fallout was nothing more than business disagreements, especially the issues with money and career mishandling. However, Mick Hennessy wasn’t going to let Tyson Fury go so easily as he proceeded to take the former boxing champion to court for an apparent breach of contract. Meanwhile, the Manchester native didn’t want to stretch this issue more than he had to, and decided to settle the issue with a $1.5 million payment.

Since bidding Mick Hennessey farewell, ‘The Gypsy King’ has been constantly fighting under Frank Warren, who’s got an incredible resume as well. The 72-year-old is responsible for launching the likes of Daniel Dubois, Joseph Parker, Zhilei Zhang, Derek Chisora, and more, into prominence in the boxing scene.

Meanwhile, there could be some fans with the belief that Tyson’s father John Fury could be his manager as he’s always by his son’s side during his fights. However, that’s far from the reality. In actuality, ‘The Gypsy King’ is managed by Spencer Brown. Finally, let’s take a final look at Fury’s team, especially his teammates.

List of Fury’s sparring partners

Tyson Fury, of course, has his younger brother Tommy as his teammate, who might be a professional boxer but has mostly been known for influencer-boxing fights. On the other hand, some of his sparring partners are actually on the rise in their respective divisions, and some are even undefeated as of now. They include undefeated boxers like Fernely Feliz Jr., Alexis Barriere, and Aleksei Dronov. Fury also has Zhan Kossobutskiy as another one of his sparring partners, who’s suffered only one defeat in his professional career so far.

Ahead of his rematch against Oleksandr Usyk, Tyson Fury even recruited a fairly young boxer, who has been dubbed as the ‘British Mike Tyson’. The boxer in question is Moses Itauma, who’s a Slovakian-born English fighter. At 19 years old, he might be getting the rub that most up-and-comers only dream of, but also, Fury could also be benefitting by sparring with a young and hungry boxer.

Tyson Fury has even recently made some more additions to his sparring team. To not leave any stone unturned ahead of the Usyk fight, ‘The Gypsy King’ has brought in six boxers who share a similar physical frame to that of the Ukrainian star.

The Manchester native might have changed his promoter and his trainer, but the rest of his team remains the same. There could be some sparring partners coming in here and there, but his family has always been with him no matter who he decided to associate himself with. It also seems like he’s locked and loaded for his rematch against Oleksandr Usyk. But can he become the undisputed champion come this weekend?
