Initially, when Oscar De La Hoya came to know about Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul, the ‘Golden Boy’ hoped ‘Iron Mike’ would be safe getting into the ring with a “young bull” like Paul. Therefore, despite understanding the business side of the fight scheduled for July 20th, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions disapproved of Mike facing an opponent 30 years younger than him.

However, in his latest interview with FightHype, Oscar De La Hoya highlighted the pros and cons of Tyson vs. Paul. In addition to advising Paul to take a different route to be a world champion, Oscar showed faith in Mike’s ability to knock out ‘The Problem Child’. Here is what he said.

Although Oscar De La Hoya disapproves of Mike Tyson, 57, fighting Jake Paul, 27, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions believes the fight will bring laudable exposure to the sport. At the same time, De La Hoya feels Tyson vs. Paul will not set “the right image” for boxing “as a serious sport.” Therefore, despite commending Jake Paul, De La Hoya reiterated that Paul should take the sport seriously given that he wishes to win a world title.

I have been preaching since the beginning with Jake Paul that he actually can do it. He can get to a world title. But, [only] if he takes a different route. This route going up against Mike Tyson is not just the right one for me,” said Oscar De La Hoya.

I mean Mike Tyson’s 60 years old. Jake Paul’s what 26-27? If Jake Paul wants to take boxing seriously, take the route that all the other fighters take. Tough fights, up the ranks, top 10 fighters, top five, world champion. Not this route with Tyson,” Oscar De La Hoya added.

In this context, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions also revealed his pick for Tyson vs. Paul.

‘Golden Boy’ warns Paul of Tyson’s power

Last week, speaking to ES News, Oscar De La Hoya emphasized that Tyson shared the ring with “monsters” in his prime. Likewise, De La Hoya felt Mike developed a chin that could still carry him for six to eight rounds. In this connection, while Oscar did not completely turn a blind eye to Paul’s chances of winning, he said, “Tyson still has the punching power. The last thing to go till you’re in your grave basically. Yeah, Tyson catches him with a good one, it’s obviously lights out for Jake Paul.
