At the final press conference of Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia, Oscar De La Hoya and Saul ran into an altercation after the promoter boldly stated that “Golden Boy built Canelo Alvarez“. At this, irritated by De La Hoya’s statement, Alvarez accused his former promoter of trying to “steal money” the boxer’s labor generated. Later, De La Hoya told the media that he hoped he was able to distract Canelo to give Jaime Munguia an advantage.

And now, De La Hoya seems bent on unsettling Canelo Alvarez ahead of the anticipated fight on May 4th with the undisputed Super-Middleweight title on the line. Therefore, after Canelo abused De La Hoya by calling the latter an “imbecile” who takes advantage of people and profits of fighters’ names, the 51-year-old’s attorney, Ricardo P. Cestero sent Alvarez a legal notice the copy of which was obtained by ESPN.

As per Cestero’s letter, Canelo Alvarez has laid false accusations against De La Hoya and “internationally defamed” the promoter whose fighter is expected to bear down Saul and recreate ‘Golden Boy’ vs. Julio Cesar Chavez at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.  Anyway, as per Cestero’s letter, since Alvarez made his statements maliciously at the final press conference of Saul vs. Munguia, De La Hoya and his promotional company reserve the right to sue Alvarez “for the damages caused by these defamatory accusations.” Likewise, Cestero demanded Canelo retract his allegations immediately.

Soon, in the wake of this incident, Canelo Alvarez’s attorney Gregory M. Smith got in touch with ESPN and claimed that Golden Boy Promotions owed the Mexican boxer money.

Not so golden anymore

In 2010, Canelo Alvarez signed with Golden Boy Promotions and produced some of the biggest events going up against the likes of Shane Mosley, Floyd Mayweather, Amir Khan, and Gennady Golovkin among others. However, in 2020, having cited a breach of contract, Canelo Alvarez filed a lawsuit against Golden Boy Promotions, ultimately leading to Canelo’s release from the Golden Boy contract. Anyway, after Oscar De La Hoya sent Saul a legal notice, the latter’s attorney defended Canelo’s allegations.

Following the termination of his relationship with Golden Boy, Alvarez audited Golden Boy’s payments and deductions under his prior contracts. The audit found that Alvarez was owed money,” Gregory M. Smith told ESPN. In this connection, he reminded that ‘GGG’ was also underpaid after his fight against Alvarez. “Court records show that GGG also audited Golden Boy and found that he had also been underpaid. GGG then sued Golden Boy for the missing funds,” Smith added.
