It has been a month since Gervonta Davis‘s knee-gate incident against Lamont Roach Jr. During their March 1 bout, the Baltimorean unexpectedly took a knee due to grease in his eyes, leaving everyone baffled. However, what stunned everyone even more was the lack of repercussions. Referee Steve Willis didn’t count it as a knockdown, allowing Davis to retain his WBA lightweight title via a majority draw. The incident created quite a stir in the boxing world, and though the controversy seemed to be fading, it roared back into the spotlight recently.
Fresh off a hard-fought victory over Sandy Ryan to defend her WBO welterweight title—despite battling through a cut above her eye—Mikaela Mayer suddenly found herself caught in some unexpected drama. Mayer’s performance earned her a title opportunity, but the real controversy erupted afterward. During an interview, a reporter unexpectedly brought up Gervonta Davis, catching the Californian off guard and reigniting the debate.

Mikaela Mayers won with closed eyes
Recently, a prominent boxing page, Boxing n BBQ shared a snippet from Mikaela Mayer’s post-match interview discussing her cut. She said, “The Cut didn’t affect me, it was the Vaseline. So it had vaseline on it and somehow the vaseline got into my eye and there were moments where it was blurred out.”
Mayer said she got some Vaseline in her eyes from the cut.

She downplayed the blood, crediting her team for managing it. The Vaseline, though, messed with her sight. Luckily, Sandy Ryan stayed close. “But I didn’t have to look for Sandy, she was right there. Even if I couldn’t see, I could just close my eyes and chops and hooks and connect,” Mayer’s stated.
Despite not being able to see clearly in the latter rounds, Mayer had an answer for everything that Ryan had thrown against her. However, a reporter asked, “Thought about taking a knee like Gervonta Davis?” leaving Mayer froze.
Mayer tried to laugh it off, but as the reporters persisted, she explained, “No, I mean… You know my eyes were closed, I just closed my eyes and she was right there. So didn’t need to do that,” she revealed. Furthermore, as the cut came with just a few rounds remaining, she knew the fight was going to end soon. So, “it was the last couple of rounds so, 2-minute rounds, fast-paced, no need,” she declared.
Similar situations? Maybe, maybe not. One thing is for sure, it looks like Gervonta Davis can only shake off the criticism if he defeats Roach in the rematch. As the rematch date is getting closer, Claressa Shields has a heartfelt message for Tank.

Despite the animosity, GWOAT wishes Gervonta Davis the best
Claressa Shields was present at the Fontainebleau, Las Vegas to watch the Mayer-Ryan title fight. Post-fight, Sean Zittel, a journalist, caught up with her, asking her about the Tank-Roach rematch. Still hyped up after the gritty fight, Shields wasn’t able to answer clearly. “I hate to freeze up like that,” she stated.

However, once refocusing, the GWOAT touched upon Gervonta Davis’ mental struggles and how they could have affected his boxing. She refused to comment any further, as whenever she comments about Davis, it stirs unnecessary drama. However, she wished Tank the best, claiming that if Gervonta Davis gets his mental state in order, he will perform better in the rematch.
