Gervonta Davis' Olympic dream hit a snag—can he bounce back stronger for Paris 2024?

Team ‘Tank’ had a reason to celebrate. The champion had triumphed over another challenge and continues to dominate the lightweight division. A few days later, another happy news followed. A court of law tossed out the assault charges leveled against his longtime trainer Calvin Ford. Now if only the team had been blessed with an icing on the top.

Gervonta Davis reportedly wanted to visit Paris, the venue of the Summer Olympics. He wanted to be with the members of USA Boxing to motivate and encourage them. But the world champion’s altruistic gesture seems to have been snubbed. The Paris Olympics commence on July 26 and will last until August 11. On probation for the 2020 ‘hit-and-run’ case, a court of law is reportedly not too pleased with the way Gervonta Davis’ legal team presented their arguments requesting approval for allowing him a journey to Europe. Hence, as it is increasingly appearing, the team ‘Tank might be entering the waiting game for some time until a clear picture emerges.

First, the good news. Calvin Ford must have heaved a big sigh of relief. A court in Nevada axed the ‘assault with a deadly weapon’ case against him. Why? So per the available accounts, the person(s) who filed the charges against Ford failed to show up at the court for a Tuesday hearing.

The particular case dates back to February of last year. The complainants, two in this case, had accused ‘Tank’ Davis’ trainer of using a handgun to intimidate them while in Las Vegas. Following the accusations, in October, the law enforcement authorities from the city obtained a legal order to take Ford into custody. Since he was in Baltimore at the time, authorities there finally detained him on December 29.

Subsequently, he was taken to Nevada, where law enforcement officials filed two ‘assault’ charges against him. All along, Calvin Ford and his team insisted on his innocence and asserted that the purported incident was baseless. Now on to the suspense.

According to ‘The Baltimore Banner’, a judge has reportedly objected to the presentations made by Gervonta Davis’s attorney. They had approached the honorable court to seek authorization, allowing the world champion to travel to Paris and spend some time with the Team USA boxing prospects.

The request stemmed from Davis’ probation sentence following the 2020 Baltimore ‘hit-and-run’ case, which included 200 hours of community service and 90 days of house arrest. According to the news journal, the judge handling the case reportedly sought ‘more specific information’. “She then ended the hearing without ruling on the request and walked off the bench,” the report in The Baltimore Banner mentioned.

One of the ‘faces of boxing’, Gervonta Davis, returned over a year after he defeated Ryan Garcia. Putting aside any suspicions of ring rust, after a typically slow start, he demolished Frank Martin in yet another title defense. Ever since his win, there have been talks emerging of a potential match-up with IBF champion Vasyl Lomachenko for a title unification. Then, a much-sought-after clash with Shakur Stevenson also made frequent appearances. Thus, it is very likely that Gervonta Davis will return to the boxing ring later this year for another matchup.
