Jake Paul will square off against legendary boxer Mike Tyson on November 15th this year! Interestingly, Paul could have faced Nico Ali Walsh, the grandson of Muhammad Ali. After avenging his loss to Sona Akale at the James L. Knight Center in Miami Beach, Florida, last weekend, Walsh made a revealing statement.

After the fight ended, surrounded by a booing crowd, Walsh said, “Before this fight I [refused] a multi-million dollar contract from MVP promotions to fight Jake Paul. But I am fighting a real fighter”. This statement caught the attention of boxing commentator Wade Plemons, who proposed a fight between Walsh and Paul. However, Paul’s trainer, BJ Flores, quickly shut down the idea.

The clip of Walsh’s statement quickly went viral, prompting Plemons to respond on social media. He tweeted, “I honestly feel like in a weird way this would make a Nico vs Jake fight even bigger”. He suggested that such a fight could be the perfect setup for an influencer vs. real boxer event, calling it “Real boxing vs ‘circus’ boxing.” “We’ll see if this holds up in a few years,” he further added.

It’s worth mentioning that Walsh had branded the entire influencer boxing scene “Circus” in his statement after beating Akale. Regardless, Flores quickly discovered Wade’s tweet on the situation, and wrote back, “He’s way [too] small Wade”.

Walsh currently fights in the middleweight division, while Jake Paul had to move up to heavyweight to face Mike Tyson. After that fight was postponed, Paul replaced Tyson with Mike Perry, and he is currently fighting at cruiserweight. So, a potential fight against Walsh, while possible, is unlikely to happen because Walsh was truly disgusted with such a matchup.

While Paul’s MVP Promotions haven’t responded to Walsh’s claims, the question now is, what led Walsh to make such a statement in the first place?

The Jake Paul revelation came out because of Teofimo Lopez

Walsh was fighting on the undercard of Teofimo Lopez vs. Steve Claggett, and he seems to have taken issue with something Lopez said in an interview a few weeks before the event in Florida. After his unanimous decision win, Walsh wanted to address those statements from Lopez.

Speaking to a reporter from ESPN during the post-fight in-ring interview, Walsh said, “One thing for sure I gotta clear, Teofimo Lopez said in an interview a few weeks before this fight – he disrespected my family saying that I’m only in boxing because I’m desperate for money and fame and I thought that was real wrong for someone I used to look up to say”.

Even though a fight between Jake Paul and Nico Ali Walsh is enticing, Walsh’s aversion to such a fight suggests it will never happen. Additionally, Paul’s trainer has shut down any talks of the fight happening, further proving this point. But what do you think? Should Walsh fight Paul and prove mainstream boxing is better?
