Naoya Inoue, ‘The Monster’ has made history. Earlier today, he became the second fighter ever to emerge undisputed in two weight classes after defeating Marlon Tapales in a 10th-round knockout. While the world relished this massive achievement, his promoter, Top Rank’s Bob Arum, wrote a wholesome post congratulating the Japanese fighter.

Inoue joins Terence Crawford, who in July defeated Errol Spence Jr., becoming undisputed in the welterweight division, following the same feat in the light welterweight in 2017. Inoue, the unified super bantamweight champion, was first crowned undisputed in the preceding weight class in 2022 after defeating Paul Butler via TKO. Now, as the world turns its attention toward the 30-year-old fighter, Bob Arum identified him as a “special fighter.”

Taking to his profile, the 92-year-old promoter celebrated Innoue’s victory over Tapales. He wrote, “Naoya Inoue is a special fighter, among the very best I’ve had the privilege of promoting. Congratulations to the new undisputed junior featherweight champion.”

In a growing legend of his sensational boxing prowess, The Monster landed nearly three times more punches than his Filipino opponent, 146 to 52, as per Compubox. The fighter started very strong, leaping the first three rounds. However, the crescendo dawned in round four, when a big left hook sent Tapales to the canvas. That marked Tapales’ downfall in the fight. However, picking up the slacks slowly, he fought on till the tenth round, at which point he just couldn’t.

In praise of his opponent, the monster noted at the post-fight press conference, “I couldn’t see from his face so I was quite surprised when he nearly made it to the end of the 10th round.” After having ruled the super bantamweight class aka junior featherweight, will Inoue now set his aim for another division? The fighter denied such expectations.

While ‘Bud’, Inoue’s predecessor in the 2x undisputed champion league, has shown his inkling toward moving up the weight, the latter has no such plans. At the conference, he remarked, “I think super-bantamweight is the most suitable weight class for me at the moment.” The Japanese fame went on to add, “Next year and the year after that, I want to prove that I can become an even stronger fighter.”

Earlier this year, in July, he defeated American fighter, Stephen Fulton, giving the powerhouse his career’s first loss only an inch one fight closer to the historic accolade. With the Tapales victory, 26-time winner Naoya Inoue added this feat to his previous undisputed status at Bantamweight, a first in more than half a century.
