Inside the violent ‘movie-like’ childhood of Mike Tyson
Tyson’s childhood was nothing like a bed of roses. He was born in Brooklyn, New York. Tyson’s father abandoned his family when he was just two years old. And then, there was just his mother left to raise him and his siblings. The neighborhood, where ‘Kid Dynamite’ resided, was rife with crime and violence.
Tyson says, “It was always hostile… cops always stopping and I mean ambulance always coming to pick up somebody… guns always going off,” Tyson recalls. “Just to watch these guys shooting out one another it was someone on i was watching John Wayne shoot it out watch some old Humphrey Bogart or Edward G Robinson movies and watch these guys shoot out and you’re looking and you say this is happening in real life“.
Moreover, by the time he was 13, Tyson had been arrested 38 times. Further, petty crime and street fights were a regular part of his life. Yet, amidst the chaos and violence, Tyson found an outlet in boxing. His latent talent, which he often used in street fights, later emerged as a rudimentary aspect of his personality.
A Life Transformed by Boxing
While battling the hardships and traumas of his childhood, Tyson took refuge in boxing. He was discovered by former boxer Bobby Stewart at the Tryon School for Boys in Johnstown, New York. Stewart trained Tyson for a few months before introducing him to Cus D’Amato. Later, he became Tyson’s legal guardian and launched him into boxing greatness.
