Boxing is an amazing sport, made even greater by some undefeated boxers who refuse to lose no matter what. This sport has been home to several cherished streaks that made this sport far more enjoyable and intense than it should have been. There have been many boxers with an undefeated streak, but Floyd Mayweather with his 50-0 career record, might hold the most celebrated streak in boxing.

‘Money’ retired without a single blip in his professional career with a record of 50-0. While there have been many boxers with a career-defining winning streak, no one has come close to the Michigan native in the modern era of boxing.

Furthermore, the way boxing is progressing, it looks like no one might ever get close to Mayweather’s streak. Let’s take a look.

No boxer is close to 50-0, and time isn’t on their side

At this point, no active boxer is even close to Floyd Mayweather’s record. Terence Crawford is the closest boxer with 40-0 straight career wins. However, at 37 years old, the Omaha native does not have much time at the top. Furthermore, with Crawford getting closer to his dream fight against Canelo Alvarez, he might not even remain undefeated by the end of this year.

On the other hand, other boxers closest to Mayweather’s record like Naoya Inoue (24-0, 21 KOs), Jermall Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs), Oleksandr Usyk (21-0), still have a lot of ground to cover in seemingly very little time.

Boxing is an unforgiving sport, and no one can escape aging. We recently saw Mike Tyson mercilessly failing in his attempt to cheat age against Jake Paul in front of 70,000 live fans. With the brutal nature of boxing, combined with their age and rigorous physical demand, achieving 50-straight wings, seems quite impossible.

What’s your perspective on:

Is the era of undefeated boxing legends like Mayweather over with today's high-stakes matchups?

High-stakes matchups and Saudi Arabia’s big-money fights

The entry of His Excellency Turki Alalshikh has completely changed the boxing scenario. With dreams and high-stakes fights being made like never before, the chances of everyone remaining undefeated are getting lesser. Undefeated vs. undefeated matchups like Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia, Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk, and Dmitry Bivol vs. Artur Beterbiev have completely changed the boxing scene.

With HE Alalshikh’s financial power of driving mega-fights under his Riyadh Season banner, no boxer is going to reject such a huge sum of money. The Saudi Royal was even able to convince Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney to keep their legal battle aside for a rematch. So, at this point, it looks like he can make any fight possible. Furthermore, undefeated stars are more likely to risk their records for the massive paydays that Riyadh Season events provide them.

It is not a dig on Floyd Mayweather’s record, but rather the changed scenario of boxing today. Boxing is once again entering its golden era and these big fights have increased the likelihood of boxers losing earlier in their career and have considerably reduced the pool of fighters who can remain undefeated for 5-0 straight bouts.

Weight jumps and Boxing’s deep talent pool

With more and more fighters chasing legacy bouts across multiple weight classes, many undefeated records are going to get shattered. We saw Dmitry Bivol losing his undefeated streak in 2024. Boxers like Terence Crawford and David Benavidez might lose their streak as they are going to venture into new weight classes.

Even though it is possible to stay undefeated across multiple weight classes, as fighters like Crawford and Floyd Mayweather have shown us in the past, Floyd Mayweather’s undefeated streak reigns across five weight classes, but not everyone is as talented and ferocious as he is. Fighters now face bigger and stronger opponents and it puts their undefeated record on the line far more frequently than usual.

Over the past few years, there has been a huge influx of talent in boxing, making almost every division stacked. Every weight division now has more than one face to rely on, making it a much more exciting time for the fans. However, it also severely increases the chances of more competitive fights. This directly results in fighters getting far fewer opportunities to dominate, like Floyd Mayweather did in his prime.

All these things indicate that as time progresses, we might be getting farther from finding someone who can break Floyd Mayweather’s record. It is definitely a better era to be a boxing fan, but we can’t say the same for boxers who want to dominate their weight division.

Boxing is changing for the better and it doesn’t undermine what ‘Money’ achieved in his career. It only makes his undefeated record far more cherishable and celebrated because we are not going to get something like this for a very long time.
