Tech giant Meta is ready to roll out a brand new verification model that could bring about drastic changes in the landscape of social media. Meta’s combined platforms Facebook and Instagram boast over two billion users each but have seen a drop in user rates since the rise of apps like TikTok. However, they plan to change this with their latest pay-for-verification model of Meta Verified.

Meta Verified would give users a verification badge on their Instagram and Facebook accounts at a price of $11.99. In addition, the service will also include extra protection against impersonating accounts, increased reach in search recommendations, and better access to customer support. Instagram’s CEO Adam Mosseri recently announced this groundbreaking news on his Instagram account. However, it didn’t garner the response he would have hoped for.

A user by the name of Whitney Pannell called out the service claiming that verifications should be earned. “I don’t agree. Verification should be earned not bought,” she wrote.

Another user named Christa Allen stated that social media platforms adopting these systems make the need for a decentralized social media platform. “pay for reach is not it. Twitter and IG proving the dire need for decentralized social media platforms,” she wrote.

This was not all as the son of boxing legend Mike Tyson, Amir Tyson also called out Meta for trying to adopt a pay-for-verification model.

“Comments are hilarious lol. This will be hilarious when it doesn’t work and the backlash stemming from this,” he wrote. This is not the first time Amir has criticized Meta for trying to implement this model. In addition, with Meta now trying to mimic Twitter’s paid model, which also failed in a short span, can it succeed, unlike its competitor?
