The boxing world awaits with bated breath as Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez makes his return to the ring after he spent some time off for treating his left wrist. Saul underwent surgery after his third bout against Gennady Golovkin in September last year. The issue with his hand apparently has been plaguing him since he fought Caleb Plant in 2021. He also pointed at his wrist injury for his loss against Dimitry Bivol. However, Canelo seems prepared as he returns to the ring to face John Ryder in his hometown after more than a decade.
Canelo Alvarez last fought in his hometown of Guadalajara, on November 6, 2011, where he faced off against Puerto Rican boxer Kermit Cintron. With years of experience in the ring, Canelo exudes a strong sense of self-assurance. This was apparent when he was asked by Radio Rahim for his thoughts on who truly represents ‘the face of boxing’, particularly in light of comments made by Mike Tyson and Gervonta Davis.

After his victory against Ryan Garcia, when asked in the post-fight interview if he thinks that he is now ‘the face of boxing’, Gervonta Davis had this to say – “Abso-f—ing-lutely”. Since then, it has been a hot debate among fans and fighters alike. These claims got even stronger after the huge number of PPV sales for the Davis-Garcia fights were revealed. This prompted Oscar De La Hoya to call Garcia ‘the king of PPVs’.
Recently, boxing legend Mike Tyson also shared his agreement with ‘Tank’ Davis being ‘the face of boxing’. Mike Tyson recently told Pro Wrestling Bits in an interview that he thinks that after his victory against Garcia, ‘KingRy’s’ fans will turn into ‘Tank’s’ fans. And that Davis will have the most drawing power now.
However, it seems that Alvarez doesn’t agree with Tyson, and he made his thoughts clear in a recent interview he did with Radio Rahim. Rahim told Alvarez that Tyson recently said that Gervonta Davis is ‘the face of boxing’. He also mentioned that Tyson believes David Benavidez can beat Canelo. He then asked what Canelo thinks about those comments. To this, Alvarez replied, “They wish, They wish, but you know it’s not that easy. I’m still here”. Alvarez made it clear that as long as he is fighting in the ring there can only be one ‘face of boxing’, him.

Eddie Hearn shares his opinion on ‘the face of boxing’
Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has come out in support of Canelo Alvarez. He claims that Alvarez is still ‘the face of boxing’, despite people claiming Davis has replaced him. Hearn mentioned that people are calling Davis ‘the face of boxing’ for “one fight against Ryan Garcia”. He then went further and pointed out that Davis’ previous sales were not up to par. He asked, “What had ‘Tank’ Davis done in his previous pay-per-view fights? 60,000, 70,000, 100,000, 150,000”.

Hearn further said that Garcia and Davis both being top fighters, had one of the biggest fights in boxing and thus managed to do “very well”. However, it was a collective result and not just because of an individual. Even though Hearn acknowledged Davis’ talent as a top-level fighter, he believes that it’s not the only factor that determines ‘the face of boxing’. He claimed that consistency is also a huge factor, and Canelo has earned more than anyone else on a pound-for-pound list. What is your stand regarding the ‘face of boxing’ debate?
